Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Big Red sink Ladies

GRANVILLE, Ohio – After the first game between Denison University and the Kenyon College women's basketball team was close, the Big Red used a strong second half to take the game over the Ladies. Kenyon falls to 6-17 overall and 4-17 in the North Coast Athletic Conference while Denison improves to 8-12, 6-7 NCAC.

The Ladies started the game on a 5-0 run but, over the course of a few minutes, the Big Red erased the advantage. With 3:17 left in the first quarter, Claudia Cooke put a Kenyon missed shot back, regaining the lead for the Ladies. Despite Kenyon having a lead for most of the first quarter, the Big Red finished the first quarter on top, 13-11.

Starting the second quarter, Denison sparked a 7-3 run and forced a Kenyon timeout. Out of the timeout, Katie Orefice drove the lane and drew a shooting foul. Orefice knocked down both free throws, chipping away at the Big Red lead. Following a defensive stand, Greta Propp scored on a fast-break layup through contact. Propp nailed the free throw, closing the deficit to one. The Ladies took the lead back as Madelyn Anderson found Cooke in the paint. Bridget Molnar tied the game up with 16 seconds left before the half.

The Big Red came out of the break hot from the field, scoring six straight points. The Ladies responded with five of their own. With three minutes left in the third quarter, Molnar converted the and-one to snap the Denison run. The Big Red went one for two from the line with five seconds left in the quarter to push their lead to 51-42.

In the fourth, the Ladies continued to cut into the Denison lead. With 5:53 left, Kenyon brought the game back to within single digits. Shortly after, the Big Red pushed the lead back to double-digits,62-48. A shot from Isa Contreras gave Denison a 14 point lead before Madelyn Anderson connected from deep to stall the Big Red. Cooke finished the scoring with a layup but the Big Red won the game, 71-56.

Anderson led the Ladies in scoring with 15 points, followed by Propp and Orefice with 11 each.

The Ladies make their final road trip of the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 16 when they take on Wittenberg University at 6 p.m.
