Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Ladies run out of gas at Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Struggling on the offensive end of the court Wednesday night, the Kenyon College women's basketball team still found a way to carry a lead into the fourth quarter. It was that final quarter, however, that was their downfall, as the host Wittenberg University Tigers outscored the Ladies 22-8 to post a 57-46 win.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 6-18 overall and 4-11 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. With one game left in the regular season, the Ladies sit in sixth place, one game ahead of Hiram College and the College of Wooster, in the conference standings. Saturday at 1 p.m. the Ladies will finish off the regular season with a home game against Hiram.

Wednesday night got off to a slow start for Kenyon. The Ladies shot just 2-of-15 in the first quarter. Senior Grace Connery scored five points, but Wittenberg jumped out a 12-7 advantage at the end of the first ten minutes of play.

The Ladies struggled offensively in the second quarter, as well, but they did fare a little better on the scoreboard, outscoring the Tigers, 13-11. Connery had eight points at the half, while Katie Orefice and Claudia Cooke had six apiece. Those three accounted for all Kenyon scoring, as the Ladies trailed 23-20 at the break.

Late in the third quarter, the Ladies earned their first lead. A Madelyn Anderson three-pointer at the 2:04 mark tied the game at 33-33. Thirty seconds later, Greta Propp popped in a free throw to put the Ladies ahead by one. Over the final seconds of the quarter, Anderson added a pair of free throws and Orefice sank a jumper to give Kenyon a 38-35 edge heading in the fourth quarter.

The effort expended by the Ladies to gain the lead took its toll over the final 10 minutes. Wittenberg regained the lead at 40-39 within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. The Tigers then went on an 11-2 tear to open up a 10-point cushion with four minutes remaining.

Connery answered with a three-pointer, her third of the game, but Wittenberg closed out the game on a 6-2 run to seal the 11-point win.

Connery ended up with a team-high 15 points. Her trio of three-pointers gave her 76 on the season, a new career-best, and, by far, the best total in the conference. Cooke went 8-of-8 at the free throw line and finished with 12 points, while Orefice rounded out the Ladies' double-digit scorers with 11, putting her eight points away from 400 for the season.

Wittenberg was paced by Jade Simpson and Kristie Kalis, who both scored 12.

Both teams racked up 21 turnovers, but Wittenberg scored 22 points off Kenyon's mistakes, while Kenyon managed just eight points off the Tiger errors.

The win improved Wittenberg to 15-7 overall and to 10-4 in the conference, good for fourth place.
