Zavaleta wins region, secures spot at nationals

RESULTS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Led by sophomore Israel Zavaleta, a trio of Kenyon College divers had great success Friday at the NCAA Regional Diving Championship, which was held at Calvin University. Zavaleta, however, stole the show, winning the regional title on the three-meter board.

Zavaleta topped a field of 27 NCAA Division III divers with an overall score of 542.80. His win automatically qualified him for a spot in next month's NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship.

Teammates Mason Fishell and Drew Albrecht, both juniors, finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively, giving themselves a decent chance at advancing to nationals. Fishell edged Albrecht by a 440.50 to 437.50 count.

The region Kenyon is competing in has been allocated 10 spots for advancement to the NCAA Championship. Tomorrow's results from the one-meter competition will have a bearing on the final list of qualifiers.
