Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Lords use strong first quarter to defeat Comets

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Coming off their season-opening win over Washington and Jefferson College at home, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team went on the road to defeat Capital University, 9-7. Cameron Longway led the Lords with three goals while Mayo Amorello notched 12 saves.

The Lords came out of the gates on fire with a flurry of shots toward Capital goalkeeper Sam McInturf. With 10:12 left in the first quarter, Will Harrigan found an open Longway right outside of the crease. Longway easily put the shot in the back of the net to give Kenyon the opening lead. Longway notched his second goal of the game a minute later off a Joe Boesel pass to double the Kenyon lead. With 8:11 remaining in the quarter, Jack Giuffre beat his defender as he made his way in front of the cage to score. The Lords' final goal of the quarter came from Boesel as he ripped a shot over the shoulder of McInturf.

In the second quarter, the Capital defense tightened up and held the Lords scoreless on 11 shots. Both teams saw opportunities to score but neither could convert. Going into halftime, Kenyon held on to their 4-0 advantage they gained in the opening 15 minutes.

90 seconds into the third quarter, Giuffre fed Longway in front of the net who tipped it past McInturf. Following Longway's third goal and a face-off win, Kenyon added to their lead 16 seconds later on Joe Bolea's goal. Capital cracked the scoreboard with 12:16 left in the third, preventing the shutout and starting a run of four unanswered goals. The Lords snapped the Comets' scoring run as Matt Pollack added his name to the score sheet with 5:07 to go in the third. After 45 minutes of play, the Lords remained in control, 7-4.

On the quarter's opening faceoff, Kenyon regained their four goal advantage as Rollins Heath ripped a shot into the top of the cage. With 11:27 left in the fourth, the Lords started an extra-man up opportunity. Kenyon took full advantage of having the extra player, scoring on a Declan Curry one-timer. The Comets cut the Kenyon lead down with a pair of goals, bringing the score to 9-6. With under two minutes left in the game, Capital tried to make things interesting with another goal but the Lords closed out the game.

Kenyon (2-0) returns home to host Otterbein University on Wednesday. First face-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
