Zavaleta sweeps regional titles

RESULTS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- One day after winning the regional title on the three-meter diving board, Kenyon College sophomore Israel Zavaleta returned to Calvin University's Venema Aquatic Center on Saturday to win the one-meter title at the 2022 NCAA Division III Regional Diving Championship.

Yesterday's win automatically punched Zavaleta's ticket to next month's NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championship, but Saturday's follow-up win proved he'll be one of the favorites on the national stage. His win also freed up a possible spot for teammates Mason Fishell and Drew Albrecht to move up the qualification ladder and gain access to the national championship meet.

Zavaleta won the one-meter regional title with a score of 521.45, nearly 60 points more than second-place William Simmons of Denison University.

Fishell placed 13th in Saturday's field of 30 divers. He scored a 414.45, while Albrecht  scored a 401.25 and placed 15th. Even though the two were in the middle of the pack Saturday, their top-10 performance's yesterday on the three-meter board could carry them through to nationals, which will start March 16 in Indianapolis.

The NCAA will of
ficially release the final list of all diving qualifiers on Monday.
