Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Anderson’s career-high leads Ladies to victory

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After a bit of a shaky start, the Kenyon College women's basketball team woke up in a hurry Sunday afternoon. The Ladies scored 19 unanswered points between the first two quarters of play and rode that run to a 75-55 home win against the Fighting Scots from The College of Wooster.

With the help of four points from Harley Holloway, Wooster (4-16, 3-8 NCAC) opened the game with leads of 6-1 and 10-4. Momentum then took a hard turn after Kenyon senior Madelyn Anderson buried a three-pointer with 2:45 left on the first-quarter clock.

From there, the Ladies (6-15, 4-8 NCAC) took over the contest, as they converted their next seven field-goal attempts, including a trio of three-pointers, and raced out to a 23-10 advantage. The run, which covered 4:23, saw both Anderson and Katie Orefice score six points.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the court, the Kenyon defense held Wooster without a field goal for a span of 7:33. In that time, Wooster was 0-of-12 from the floor and 1-of-2 at the free throw line.

The Kenyon surge didn't end there. Anderson ended up going 4-of-6 from long distance and had 14 points in the half. Orefice tacked on seven points, along with four assists, and the Ladies waltzed into intermission with a 37-21 lead.

In the second half, sophomore Claudia Cooke was the go-to for Kenyon. She had a quiet first half with three points and three rebounds, but came to live in the second half, racking up 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Cooke's final totals of 18 points and 14 rebounds gave her her sixth double-double of the season. Orefice also ended up with a double-double by tallying 12 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Greta Propp nearly reached the accomplishment, too, but fell just short with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Anderson wound up 5-of-9 behind the arc and 8-of-13 overall. Her 21 points were not only a game-high, but a career-high.

As a team, the Ladies shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58), while holding Wooster to 29.9 percent (20-of-67).

The Fighting Scots, who were led by Hollowway's 12 points, never reduced their deficit to single digits during second-half play. Kenyon went ahead by as many as 25 late in the game, before settling on the 20-point win.
