Bishay, Buckwalter power Ladies’ big day

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Thursday was a big day for the Kenyon College softball team, which used a strong pitching performance from senior Nicole Bishay to hand Drew University its first loss of the season and then used a program-record seven RBI from senior Emily Buckwalter to run-rule Immaculata University.

The 5-1 victory against Drew and the 15-0 win over Immaculata ran Kenyon's record to 7-1. The losses dropped Drew to 8-1 and Immaculata to 0-6.

Bishay pitched the distance in game one, holding the previously unbeaten Ranges to one run on seven hits. She walked one, struck out four and improved her record to 4-0, while lowering her season earned run average to 1.08.

Run support for Bishay came mainly from Grace Finn and Bella Albrecht. Finn, a senior batting at the top of the Kenyon order, was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI. Albrecht, a senior who hit in the clean-up spot, went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

In the first inning, Albrecht singled home Finn for the Ladies' first run. In the fourth, Albrecht singled again and later came around to score on a Drew error.

Holding a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning, the Ladies broke the game open when Albrecht tripled and later scored on a wild pitch. With two out in the same inning, Finn reached for an outside pitch and dropped a bloop single down the left field line, scoring Clare McMahon and Persy Hort

In game two, it was Buckwalter's turn to take over at the plate. In the first inning, she grounded out to shortstop, but plated Kenyon's first run, and her first RBI, when Finn scored on the play.

In the second inning, with the base full, Buckwalter blasted a shot over the right centerfield fence for a grand slam and four more RBI. It was her first home run of the season and the second of her Kenyon career.

In her next at-bat during the third inning, Buckwalter smacked a liner to the same location in right center, allowing both Albrecht and Finn to score. Buckwalter's seven RBI, in just three innings of work, set the new Kenyon single-game mark and topped the previous mark of six RBI set by multiple players, most recently by Finn and Grace Pilz in the 2019 season.

Matching Buckwalter's two hits in the game were Paige Milhon and Sophia Lynch. Albrecht, Amanda Harris and Natalya Delsante added two RBI apiece and Finn scored four times.

In the two games combined, Finn scored five runs, giving her 14 runs on the season and 120 for her career. That total moved her into second place in the Kenyon career record book, leaving only Maddie Maldonado's program record of 150 runs left to chase.

In the pitcher's circle, senior Emily Pater got the start for Kenyon in game two and went three innings to earn her third win of the season. Harris, a first-year, pitched the final two innings and struck out three as the Ladies closed out the Mighty Macs in five innings.
