Lords win rematch with Lions

FORT PIERCE, FL – The Kenyon College pitching staff stranded 15 Penn State Behrend runners on base on their way to a 13-7 win. The Lords sealed the game with a five-run eighth inning to improve to 3-4 on the season.

Kenyon starter Lewis Cropper got off to a great start, striking out the first two Lions of the game. Cropper gave up a double but came back with another strikeout. In the bottom of the first, the Lords started the same way as the Lions, a pair of strikeouts. Alex Gow sent a ball over the fence, giving Kenyon a lead they would hold on to for the rest of the game. Following the home run, Andrew Rabinowitz doubled to right center, bringing Edwin Groff to the plate. Groff singled in Rabinowitz to push the Kenyon lead to 2-0.

A single and a walk put runners on first and second, moving up a base on a failed pickoff with two outs. With Behrend threatening, Cropper struck out Zac Bogats to end the Lion side. Kenyon plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second after a walk and an error put Alexander Hoskins and Malcolm Gaynor on base. Nate Rosen struck out but Gow forced a walk of his own to load the bases for Rabinowitz. Rabinowitz singled in between the first and second basemen to score Hoskins from third and Gaynor from second.

Leading off the fourth, Cropper got the leadoff hitter out on a pop out. Cropper walked the next hitter and gave up a base hit. CJ Weller drew a hit by pitch, chasing Cropper from the game. Coming into a bases loaded situation, Zach Frizzera allowed a sacrifice fly to give the Lions their first run of the game. Frizzera escaped the Lion pressure with a strikeout to fire up the Kenyon dugout.

Coming up to the plate in the fourth, Tripper Capps hammered a no-doubter over the left field fence, reinforcing the four run lead.

Behrend scored a run on a triple and a wild pitch, bringing the ball game to 5-2. With one out in the bottom half, Groff tripled off the wall in right before scoring on a Will Sturgeon groundout with the infield in.

In the bottom of the sixth, Hoskins and Gaynor singled before Rosen reached on a hit by pitch. A few batters later, Rabinowitz got plunked to force in the run. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Groff struck out but reached on a wild pitch and scored Gaynor on third.

Facing an 8-2 deficit, the Lions worked a pair of base hits to start the seventh inning into two runs, cutting the Kenyon lead in half. In the top of the eighth, a leadoff double scored on an RBI single to center, bringing the score to 8-5.

The Lords went to work in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. Rosen started the inning with a single, but he was erased on Alex Gow's fielder's choice. Rabinowitz walked and Groff struck out, but Sturgeon followed with a bunt single to third, loading the bases. Capps flared one down the right field line to score Gow and Rabinowitz. Drew Robinson laced one to the third baseman but the shot was too hard for him to handle and ended up in left field. Hoskins came up and cleared the bases with his two RBI double to right center, giving Kenyon a 13-5 lead for the Lions' last chance.

Behrend notched two in the top of the ninth but Liam Rosengren struck out Mac Ciocco looking to end the game.

Cropper registered the win on the mound for the Lords, striking out six in 3.1 innings while giving up a single run.

The Lords face off against Albright College in a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
