Ladies softball team runs win streak to seven

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Two more victories Saturday extended the Kenyon College softball team's win streak to seven games. The Ladies defeated Albion College, 6-3, in the first game of the day and then, after a brief rain delay, knocked off SUNY Brockport, 8-3.

The Ladies' 11-1 start matches the program's best record through the first 12 games of a season. The 2020 team also started 11-1, but lost three of the next four before the pandemic brought an early end to the season.

Kenyon and Albion went back-and-forth in Saturday's opener. With the score tied 3-3 in the fifth inning, the Ladies' offense took over. The Kenyon women regained the lead when Emily Buckwalter walked and later advanced to second on a groundout. She was replaced there by pinch runner Persy Hort, who ended up scoring on an RBI hit from Nicole Archambeau.

The Ladies gave starting pitcher Nicole Bishay even more breathing room in the sixth inning by tacking on two more runs. Those two came after both Natalya Delsante and Maddie Friday were hit by pitches. Grace Finn then dropped a single into right, allowing Delsante to score. A few moments later, Finn stole second and Friday bolted home following a throwing error by Albion's catcher.

In the top of the seventh, Bishay allowed an Albion single, but then got a double play and a pop up to end the inning and the game. She, once again, went the distance in the pitchers' circle, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits and two walks. She struck out three and got Albion batters to fly out a dozen times.

Delsante ended up scoring twice in that first game. She was one of eight Kenyon players to have one hit. Buckwalter and Bishay each had a double. The rest of the Ladies' hits were singles.

Game two had Emily Pater taking on starting pitching duties for the Ladies. Outside of a tough third inning, she held Brockport at bay. Kenyon had a 2-0 lead going into that third inning, but Brockport managed five hits and scored three runs, all with two outs.

Aside from that inning, Pater gave up just two hits in her other six innings of work. She finished the game with the win and a stat line that covered seven innings, seven hits, three runs, one walk and one strikeout.

In the top of the fourth, the Ladies came right back and knotted the game at 3-3 after Clare McMahon singled, moved to second on wild pitch and then moved to third on a throwing error. Friday followed up by reaching base via another error and McMahon came home to score.

With Pater still dealing, the Ladies' offense, much like the first game, gave her some late-game insurance, scoring three times in the top of the seventh. The first two of those three runs were generated by Finn, who ripped a triple down the right field line to score both McMahon and Delsante. The triple was Finn's first of the season and ninth of her Kenyon career. She now sits atop the record book with Amanda Coyle '18, who previously held the program record to herself.

Finn scored the last run of the game when Sara Campagna singled up the middle. Finn ended the game 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base. Campagna also had two hits and an RBI, while Buckwalter, who has a .529 batting average (9-for-17) over the team's last five games, went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
