Ladies rout Knights, 14-1

BUENA VISTA, VA – The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team dominated the Southern Virginia Knights 14-1 on Saturday at Knight Stadium. Ladies' goalkeeper Nola Garand allowed the Knights' lone goal in the first quarter but finished with five saves on nine shots.

The Ladies started applying pressure on the Knights early as Maddie Garner won the opening draw control. After Kenyon set up their offense, Ella Murphy drew the foul on her way to the cage to earn a free position shot. Murphy took advantage of the opportunity, placing her shot in the back of the net to give the Ladies a 1-0 lead only 45 seconds into the game.

With 10:26 left in the first, Blythe Karras found the back of the net to push the Ladies' lead to 2-0. Less than a minute later, Caroline O'Neil sliced her way through the defense to score  her first goal of the day. O'Neil added another tally to the Kenyon score with 6:52 remaining in the first. Southern Virginia stopped the Ladies goal streak with 4:49 remaining in the quarter on a goal by Alissa Johnson, bringing the score to 4-1. Mallory Brophy tacked on the Ladies' fifth goal with 3:30 before O'Neil scored with 15 seconds remaining in the quarter.

In the second quarter, the Knights' defense started to settle in but so did the Ladies' defense. Southern Virginia limited the Ladies to three goals in the quarter. In the quarter, the Ladies outshot the Knights 8-2 in the quarter while forcing four turnovers. At halftime, Kenyon sat firmly in control, 9-1.

Coming out of halftime, the Ladies started the period with a goal from Blythe Karras 26 seconds into the half. With 11:39, Murphy scored the Ladies' 11th goal of the game off a free position shot with three seconds on the shot clock. The goal by Murphy moved the deficit to 10 goals, starting the rolling clock. As the clock ticked under five seconds in the quarter, Kate Lengel scored her first goal of the game. Turnovers continued to plague the Knights in the quarter as Kenyon forced three of Southern Virginia's four turnovers in the quarter.

The Ladies carried their momentum into the fourth quarter as Garner found the back of the net with just under 12 minutes to go in the game, putting Kenyon up 13-1. With 4:04 remaining in the game, O'Neil scored her fifth goal of the game as she beat two defenders on her way to the net, finding more than enough space to put it past Madilyn Pedroza. The Ladies ran out the rest of the time remaining in the game to easily take the game, 14-1.

Kenyon (4-1)  continues their road trip on Tuesday as they take on Dickinson College at 11 a.m.
