Kenyon offense has rare off day

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- For the first 14 games of the season, the Kenyon College softball team pummeled most of its competition with a relentless barrage of offense. That, however, was not the case Tuesday as the Ladies struggled at the plate during a 3-2 loss to SUNY Oneonta and a 9-0 five-inning defeat at the hands of Central College.

The Ladies (13-3) clung to a 2-1 advantage in Tuesday's first game against Oneonta. In the bottom of the seventh, Oneonta started a rally with a pair of singles. Kenyon pitcher Nicole Bishay then retired the next two, but Oneonta scored the tying run on a double and then chalked up the winning run on a Kenyon error.

The loss was the first of the season for Bishay, who went the distance, while giving up eight hits and no walks. She struck out four and allowed two earned runs.

Kenyon's two runs were scored back in the second and fourth innings. In the second, Bishay doubled down the right field line. Natalya Delsante followed up with a single, also down the right field line, that scored Bishay. In the fourth, Bishay singled and later came around to score on an Oneonta error.

Those two Kenyon runs would be it for the day, as the Ladies were no-hit in the second game against Central starting pitcher Morgan Schaben and reliever Chloe Dougherty. Schaben recorded the first 13 outs of the game before giving way to Dougherty. She walked three and struck out two. Dougherty then closed out the game with the last two outs in the five-inning run-rule decision.

Neither pitcher was overpowering, the Kenyon batters ended up hitting fly balls right at the Central defense. In fact, of the 15 outs recorded, 12 of them were in the air. Two Ladies struck out and the other grounded out.

Central got a run in the second inning and then four more in the third. They continued to rough up Kenyon starter Emily Pater in the fifth, scoring four more times to put the run rule in effect. Pater didn't walk or strike out anyone. Central, however, timed her up to the tune of 10 hits and nine earned runs.

The wins moved Oneonta's overall record to 4-3 and Central's record to 5-5.

The Kenyon women have one more day left in Florida and will play University of Maine-Presque Isle at 9 a.m. Wednesday, followed by an 11 a.m. game against Alfred State College.
