Fitzgerald, Zavaleta win national titles on day one

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – On the first day of the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships, Kenyon College swimming and diving team members Bryan Fitzgerald and Israel Zavaleta claimed individual national championships in their respective events. After the first day of events, the Lords sit in fifth place with a total of 65.50 points. Emory University currently holds the top spot with 101 points.

In the 500-yard freestyle, Fitzgerald won the event with a time of 4:21.58. Fitzgerald's time clocked in two-and-a-half seconds before the next closest swimmer. The win for Fitzgerald claims his first national title and fifth All-American honor. James Tracy finished 21st in 4:31.07, while Max Nonnenmacher finished 32nd with a time of 4:33.23.

Luis Weekes finished the 200-yard individual medley 18th (1:49.39). Noah Althoff posted a time of 1:49.90 and Noah Hargrove finished in 1:50.72, good for 23rd and 35th, respectively.

The Lords gained points from a seventh place finish by David Fitch and a 10th place finish from Marko Krtinic in the 50-yard freestyle. Fitch finished his championship heat in 20.13 seconds, and Krtinic finished the consolation final in 20.11 seconds. Daniel Brooks placed 32nd with a time of 20.53.

Zavaleta claimed his first national title and All-American honor with a win in the three-meter diving competition. He racked up 561.80 points in the finals after posting a score of 534.00 in the preliminaries. Drew Albrecht picked up his first All-American honor with a 10th-place finish, totaling 455.45 points. Mason Fishell finished with 366.35, landing in 35th place.

The Lords return to the pool for day two tomorrow with preliminary heats starting at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
