Game Recap: Baseball |

Lords' pitching dominates Blazers

FORT PIERCE, FL – The Kenyon College baseball team took both games in their doubleheader with Hood College, 8-1 and 10-0. On the day, five Lords' pitchers combined for 26 strikeouts and four walks, while only giving up one run on 10 hits. The two wins for the Lords ended their Florida trip with an 8-6 record.

GAME ONE

In game one, Alex Gow registered a complete game as he struck out 15 batters while scattering five hits and two walks, allowing one run.

Gow received all the run support he would need for the rest of the game in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of flyouts started the Lords' inning, but Gow followed with a walk. Andrew Rabinowitz brought Gow in on an RBI double, giving Kenyon a 1-0 lead. Rabinowitz advanced on a wild pitch before Luke Meister scored him while reaching on an error by the shortstop.

The Lords used a similar method in the bottom of the second to score two more runs. Edwin Groff reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on an Alexander Hoskins' double. Malcolm Gaynor repeated Meister's result the inning prior, bringing in Hoskins on an error, to put the Lords up 4-0.

Hoskins drove in Groff once more in the home half of the fourth, this time on a two-run homerun. Rabinowitz brought in Will Sturgeon on a sacrifice fly to center, putting Kenyon ahead with a controlling 7-0 lead.

The Blazers finally touched up Gow in the top of the fifth with runners on first and second. With two outs, Hood scored their only run of the game on an RBI single. The Lords tacked on one more run in the bottom half on Gaynor's RBI double to score Drew Robinson

In the final six outs for the Blazers, Gow struck out the side in order in the sixth and struck out two more in the seventh. Gow's final strikeout of the game came without a swing and pushed his total to 15.

GAME TWO

The second game between the Blazers and Lords started with two scoreless innings before Kenyon scored in the top of the third. Back-to-back singles by Hoskins and Gaynor put runners on and led to a Sturgeon walk to load the bases. Gow reached on an error by Hood's pitcher to push across Hoskins and give the Lords a 1-0 lead. A couple batters later Meister reached on another Hood error by the first baseman to score Gaynor and Sturgeon. The Blazers escaped the inning but not before Kenyon plated three on the pair of miscues.

In the fourth, the Lords brought in three more. Hoskins lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Robinson from third. After a Blazers' pitching change, Groff came home on a wild pitch, making the game 5-0. Two consecutive errors gave Kenyon another run to make the game 6-0 after four.

With one out in the sixth, Sturgeon blasted his first homerun of the year. With the bases loaded, Tripper Capps brought in pinch-runner Ryan Beach-Verhey as Capps got hit by the pitch. The Lords scored their fifth run off of Hood errors, bringing the score to 9-0. The final Kenyon run came on a Groff sacrifice fly.

The Blazers put runners on first and third in the bottom of the seventh but another strikeout ended the game.

Kenyon returns to Ohio for a midweek game at Bluffton University on Wednesday at 4:15 p.m.
