Game Recap: Baseball |

Lords fall late in season-opener

FORT PIERCE, FL – After seven competitive innings of play, Penn State Behrend used a five-run eighth inning to defeat the Kenyon College baseball team, 6-3.

Leading off the game, the Lords went quietly as the Lions pitching staff sat down Kenyon in order. The Lords looked as if they would escape the opening inning unscathed, but a pair of errors led to the game's first run.

In the top of the fourth inning, Tripper Capps singled up the middle with two outs to bring Luke Meister up. Meister sent a ball over the lead of the left fielder to score Capps from first base and tie the game at one.

Both teams' pitching staffs settled in for the next three innings until the top of the eighth. Leading off the eighth inning, Andrew Rabinowitz battled the wind to send a ball over the fence and give Kenyon a 2-1 lead going into the bottom half.

In the home half, the Lions used timely hitting and Kenyon mistakes to take the lead for good. Behrend singled to start the inning before a sacrifice bunt and flyout moved the runner to third. With the runner on third and two outs, the Lions' Jake Dietz singled up the middle to tie the game up at two. Following a Lords pitching change, a walk and a wild pitch set up a 2 RBI triple to give the Lions a 5-2 lead. Behrend tacked on another run as Hunter Jamison reached on a dropped third strike.

In the top of the ninth, Nate Rosen went deep to bring the game within three, but a pair of groundouts ended the frame.

Collin Kelly received the win on the mound for the Lions while Zach Elsawy drew the loss.

Kenyon returns to the field with a doubleheader against Messiah University tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
