No. 14 Catholic overwhelms Ladies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Facing the No. 14 ranked Catholic University Cardinals, the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team came up short on the road. The Cardinals used a six-goal third quarter to defeat the Ladies, 14-8. Kenyon fell to 2-1 overall while Catholic (2-1) moved above .500 with the win.

Catholic started the scoring with 13:40 left in the opening quarter. After a Cardinal foul, Emma Hutchison dumped the ensuing free-position shot over the head of Rachel Searle to level the score at one a piece. Catholic added a pair of goals before the period ended to bring the score to 3-1 at the end of the first.

The Cardinals carried the momentum they built up at the end of the first into the second quarter. Catholic scored 30 seconds into the second before adding another goal at the 11:11 mark. The Cardinals pushed their lead to 6-1 on another free-position shot with 9:28 before halftime. The Ladies found life with five minutes remaining in the second. Kate Lengel beat her defender and drew Searle out of the crease, finding Ali Hatfield for the open-net shot. Brett Bearrows won the following draw control to set up the Ladies' offense. Maddie Garner took the ball around the net to beat her defender. Garner found just enough space to put her shot in the top corner of the net and bring the game within three. Hatfield scored her second goal of the game with 90 seconds to go before halftime, but Catholic answered right back to restore the three goal advantage.

Coming out of the break, Catholic pressured the Ladies from the start, forcing eight turnovers in the quarter. In the third, the Cardinals placed 10 of their 11 shots on goal while holding Kenyon to two shots.

Just over a minute into the fourth, the reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Caroline O'Neil, found her first goal of the day off a free-position opportunity. O'Neil gained another free-position shot with 8:31 left. After going low earlier in the period, O'Neil put it past Searle on the right side to cut into the lead. Arielle Dumalac scored a pair of goals for the Ladies in the final two minutes, including a goal with eight seconds remaining, to cap the scoring for Kenyon.

The Ladies look to rebound from their first loss of the season with a road game at Bridgewater College on Mar. 9.
