Kenyon glides to 16-5 win at Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Maddie Garner and Caroline O'Neil scored three goals apiece Wednesday evening and steered the Kenyon College women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over the Bridgewater College Eagles.

The road game was the second of five on the Ladies' spring break slate, while the victory improved their overall season record to 3-1. For Bridgewater, the loss evened out its record at 3-3.

Throughout the contest Kenyon was efficient with its shot selection. The Ladies, who had a 9-3 halftime lead, scored those nine goals on 15 shots. For the duration, the Ladies tallied their 16 goals on 29 shots. Those numbers included converting 8-of-10 shots in free position situations.

Overall, the Ladies outshot the Eagles 29-19 and held a modest 15-10 advantage in draw controls, with Garner winning four of those draws. In fact, Garner won the first draw of the game and proceeded to score the first goal of the game, too.

Garner, a first-year, scored two more goals late in the game, bringing her season total to seven. O'Neil, a junior, scored her three goals in the first half, bringing her season total to a team-best total of 14.

Ella Murphy and Mallory Brophy each scored two goals for the Ladies, while six different players accounted for Kenyon's other six goals.

O'Neill and Murphy both scored twice in the first quarter, setting the pace and pushing Kenyon out to a 6-1 lead. Bridgewater would later pull within three goals, at 6-3, but the Eagles never got closer the rest of the way.

First-year Nola Garand got the start in front of the Kenyon goal. She played 51 minutes, made nine saves and allowed the five Bridgewater goals.

The Ladies now turn their attention to their next game, which will be Saturday against Southern Virginia University.
