Ladies split with Battling Bishops

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College softball team split its doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan University at home on Saturday. In game one, the Ladies used a big fourth inning to win 5-2. Game two saw Kenyon come back in the bottom of the sixth, but errors cost the Ladies a sweep in the seventh inning, eventually falling 11-6.

GAME ONE

Kenyon starting pitcher Nicole Bishay started strong through the first two innings, sitting the Battling Bishops down in order each time. In the top of the third, Bishay stranded a leadoff double at third to bring the Ladies to bat in the home half of the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Maddie Friday singled up the middle to put the first Kenyon baserunner on in the inning. Grace Finn followed Friday's single with one of her own with no outs. A passed ball moved both runners up a base, and an error on the throw to third scored Friday. Sara Campagna made it three-straight base hits, singling in Finn for a quick 2-0 lead. Emily Buckwalter added another run with an RBI double in the gap to push the Ladies' lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, Bishay helped herself out by bringing in Buckwalter.

Going back out for the fourth inning, Bishay retired the first two batters on a pair of groundouts. An Ohio Wesleyan single followed by a walk led to a two-RBI double with two outs, cutting the Kenyon lead down to two.

The Ladies scored an additional run in the bottom of the fifth as Bishay dropped a single over the head of the shortstop, scoring Bella Albrecht from third.

Kenyon remained in control through the sixth and into the seventh inning. Looking to spark a comeback for the Bishops, Avery Panozzo singled with two outs. Panozzo didn't get far as Campagna caught her stealing second to end the game.

GAME TWO

After winning game one, the Ladies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Campagna started things with a single into right field and moved to second as Buckwalter reached on an error by Ohio Wesleyan. A passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, leading to a two RBI single by Albrecht.

Kenyon held on to its lead until the top of the third. The Bishops started the inning with a triple and a single to bring the score within one. With runners on second and third, Ohio Wesleyan lifted what looked to be a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Once Albrecht made the catch in right, her throw to the plate went past Campagna and to Emily Pater backing up on the play. Pater flipped the ball onto Campagna at home in time to get the runner trying to score. A few batters later, the Bishops tied the game on a single up the middle.

In the fourth inning, Ohio Wesleyan used a bunt to push the runner into scoring position before an RBI single brought the run in to take the lead. The Bishops scored another run in the top of the sixth with a single to center field with two outs.

Down 4-2 and running out of opportunities to score, the Ladies ignited a furious comeback to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Albrecht started things with a single followed by a Natalya Delsante walk. A fielder's choice and a strikeout gave the Bishops two outs and a chance to get out of the inning. After entering as a pinch-hitter earlier in the game, Olivia Hurley stayed in for her second at-bat of the game and made the most of it. Hurley singled to right field to score Bishay and Delsante, tying the game at 4-4. Friday reached first base on a hit by pitch to set up Finn's two-RBI double to take the lead. After six complete innings, the Ladies sat in front of the Bishops, 6-4.

The Ladies comeback proved to come up short in the final inning. Three singles loaded the bases for Ohio Wesleyan. The Bishops took advantage of the hits, bringing in two on a double to tie the game. Following a pitching change, a walk and an error gave Ohio Wesleyan a 7-6 lead. Bishay, pitching in relief, struck out the next batter, keeping the Ladies within striking distance. Over the next two batters, the Bishops plated four runs on four Kenyon errors and put the game out of reach.

With the split, the Ladies moved to 21-11 overall on the season and 3-5 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Kenyon squares off with Wittenberg University at home on Wednesday.
