Lords start conference play with sweep of Terriers

HIRAM, Oh. – The Kenyon College Lords swept a doubleheader against the Hiram College Terriers this Saturday in dominating fashion, out-scoring the Terriers by a combined 23-0 over the two games. With the pair of wins, the Lords move to 13-6 overall on the season and 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

Game one was a rout in favor of Kenyon, whose combination of stout pitching and explosive offense led to a 17-0 victory. They were aided by a dominant pitching performance by Alex Gow, who was electric all day.

A parade of hits helped Kenyon start the game off on a strong note, stringing together a six-run first inning highlighted by a two-run double by Drew Robinson. The runs kept coming for the Lords with an offense that simply could not be stopped. Through three innings, they went up 10-0, with a Nate Rosen two-run double the biggest blow to the Terriers. That lead proved to be insurmountable, but Kenyon continued to pile on the runs anyway. They tacked on four more runs in the fourth, with Rosen blasting a two-run double.  The Lords finished off their story for the game on right fielder Luke Meister's two-run home run, putting them up 17-0.

On the pitching side, Gow was sensational. In six innings, he struck out 14 Terriers while allowing just four hits and walking none. The Hiram hitters could do little more than shake their heads at Gow's stuff as they walked back to the dugout over and over again.

Following up their strong game one performance, the Lords turned in another shutout in game two, blanking the Terriers 5-0. The Lords were lifted on the mound by Frank Lynch's stellar performance and some key at-bats from Meister in the batters' box.

After neither team mustered any offense in the first, the Lords began to get things going offensively. Andrew Rabinowitz got things going after reaching first on a hit by pitch, with a Meister single and a Will Surgeon walk loading the bases with no one out. A fielder's choice and stolen bases allowed both Rabinowitz and Meister to score, with Kenyon effectively using small-ball to jump out to a 2-0 lead.

Meitser led things off in the top of the fourth by socking the ball over the left field wall for a solo homer, pushing the Lord's advantage to 3-0. The bomb was the sophomores' second of the day.

The runs kept on coming for the Lords. In the top of the fifth, back-to-back singles by Alex Hoskins and Malcolm Gaynor led things off, putting a runner in scoring position for Kenyon. The Lords might not have converted on the opportunity but the Terriers second baseman committed an error by misplaying a throw from the outfield as Hoskins and Gaynor attempted to tag up on an Alex Gow fly ball, resulting in another run crossing the board.

The Lords tacked on their final run in the top of the seventh, when Rosen singled home Hoskins to bring the score to 5-0. That would be the final run Kenyon would score all game, but their stout pitching prevented Hiram from tallying any runs for a second straight game.

Frank Lynch picked up the win in an excellent outing. He pitched 6.1 innings while striking out seven, issuing only one free pass and five hits on an efficient 81 pitches. It continues what has been a stellar rookie year for Lynch, who came into the game with a 2.29 ERA. A four man bullpen effort helped extinguish the Terriers for good and back up Lynch's strong start.

The Lords have their next game on Wednesday, April 6, when they will take on Ohio Wesleyan in a double header on the road. The first pitch of game one is at 12.
