Ladies drop a pair of conference-opening games

GRANVILLE, Ohio -- The Kenyon College softball team opened its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule Saturday on the road at Denison University. The host Big Red greeted the Ladies with a potent offense that directed a doubleheader sweep of the Ladies.

Denison was victorious in game one, 10-2, using the run-rule to put away Kenyon in five innings. Game two was more closely contested, but the Big Red held on for a 15-10 win. The results of the doubleheader moved Kenyon's overall record at 15-7 and its NCAC record to 0-2. Denison improved to 11-8 overall and 2-0 in conference competition.

Early on, the Ladies got things going in the right direction, scoring twice in the second inning of game one, but after that Denison pitcher Sydney Silverste shut down Kenyon bats the rest of the way. The two runs that Kenyon did manage scored on a two-out double struck by Sara Campagna.

Kenyon had six hits in game one, with Campagna's double being one of them. Grace Finn and Bella Albrecht both had two hits and Emily Pater, who pitched game one for the Ladies, accounted for the other Kenyon hit.

Game two was a lot different for Kenyon, at least in terms of offense. The Ladies racked up 10 runs on 15 hits and six walks off the Big Red pitching combo of Sophia Parpala and Silverste.

The first five hitters in Kenyon's lineup all had at least two hits in game two. Within that group, Emily Buckwalter went 4-for-5 with a run scored. Finn, Campagna, and Albrecht all had two hits with two RBI. One of Albrecht's hits was a home run in the fifth inning, her first of the season.

At the bottom of the Kenyon batting order, sophomore Maddie Friday went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Kenyon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game two, but Denison came back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Another two-run hit from Campagna in the top of the second evened the score at 3-3.

The Big Red then went ahead 4-3 after three innings and broke things open with a seven-run fourth inning to move ahead 11-3.

The Ladies got five in the top of the fifth, including Albrecht's two-run homer, to pull within three runs, but that would be as close as they would get. In that five-run fifth, the Kenoyn women also got an RBI double from Friday and a two-run single from Finn.

The final two runs of the game for the Ladies came in the sixth inning, when Paige Milhon drew a bases-loaded walk and Friday followed with an RBI single.

Next up for the Kenyon club is the home-opener, which will be tomorrow against Capital University beginning at noon.
