Game Recap: Baseball |

Tigers take two from Lords

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team never found an offensive stride as Wittenberg University swept the Lords. Kenyon attempted to come back at the end of game one but ran out of time as they fell 7-5. In game two, the Tigers tagged the Lords' pitching on their way to a 10-0 win. Kenyon moves to 19-10 on the season and 8-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with the losses.

GAME ONE

To start the game, Gabe Stacy jumped on the first pitch of the afternoon from Kenyon starter Alex Gow, sending it over the center-field fence for a home run. Following the home run, the Tigers used a single and a stolen base to put another runner in scoring position. A pair of groundouts plated Wittenberg's second run off of Gow in the first.

In the fourth, a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs for the Tigers. On the next batter, Gow appeared as though he may escape the jam without allowing a run, but a bloop single into center cleared the bases. Trailing 5-0 going into the home half of the inning, the Lords found the scoreboard on Drew Robinson's RBI single into left field.

The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single of their own to bring the score to 6-1.

With outs running short, Gow started the home half of the eighth with a single. A few batters later, Luke Meister doubled over the head of the center fielder, putting runners in scoring position with one out. Tripper Capps got hit by a pitch in the next at-bat for the Lords to load the bases. After a strikeout, Wittenberg looked as if it had retired the Kenyon side on a fly ball into left field. Instead, the Tigers' left fielder lost the ball in the sun, allowing the Lords to score three runs and Robinson to reach third base. Alexander Hoskins ripped the first pitch he saw into left field to score Robinson and cut the Wittenberg lead down to one.

In the top of the ninth, the Tigers added an insurance run on a two-out RBI double down the line. Down to their final three outs, Wittenberg sat the Lords went quietly to prevent a comeback.

GAME TWO

The Tigers carried their hot hitting into the start of the second game. In the opening inning, three hits and three hit-by-pitches along with a sacrifice fly led to four Wittenberg runs.

In the second inning, Stacy hit his second home run on the day, pushing the Tiger lead to five. A single and hit by pitch placed two more runners on before a balk moved them up. Wittenberg took full advantage of the situation on a two-RBI double down the right-field line. With two outs, the Tigers extended their lead to 9-0 with a two-run home run to center field.

Over the course of the next six trips to the plate for Kenyon, the Lords could only muster up five base hits.

In the top of the eighth, Stacy walked to start the inning. Stacy stole second before being lifted for a pinch-runner. A wild pitch moved Maxwell Monachino to third where he would score on a ground ball to second. Trailing by 10 runs, the Lords needed to put points on the board to keep the game going. Back-to-back singles by Preston Henigan and J.J. Conway with two outs looked as though Kenyon may end the shutout, but a foul out to the first baseman ended the game on the mercy rule.

The Lords look to get back in the win column in a non-conference matchup with Muskingum University on Wednesday in New Concord, Ohio.
