Hiram pitching controls sweep of Kenyon

HIRAM, Ohio -- The Kenyon College softball team struggled in a doubleheader on the road against the Hiram College Terriers on Saturday afternoon, dropping games by scores of 10-0 and 7-0. The Ladies offense was only able to muster one hit over the two games in this North Coast Athletic Conference showdown.

The two defeats brought the Ladies to 22-14 on the season and 4-8 in NCAC play.

The Ladies got off to a slow start offensively in game one, largely due to stellar pitching on the part of Hiram's Darian Kanno. Kanno's stuff was just too much for the Ladies' bats from the get-go as she struck out the side in the first inning. Her dominance continued from there, striking out six over the game's first three innings without allowing a hit, albeit giving up three walks.

Conversely, the Terriers were hot with the bat from the start. All nine Hiram hitters came to bat in the first inning and five of them came home to score against Ladies' starting pitcher Nicole Bishay. While Bishay was able to get out of a jam with runners on first and second in the second inning, she was not as lucky in the third, with three more Hiram runs crossing the plate and putting Kenyon in an 8-0 hole.

The Terriers continued to surge behind Kanno. They tacked on an additional two runs in the fourth as the Ladies continued to come up empty. Kanno finished her run-rule outing after five innings, allowing no hits and striking out nine.

The Ladies fell behind early once again in game two after Hiram used small-ball to plate two runs in the second frame. Then, in the third inning Emily Pater singled for the first Kenyon hit of the day, but the Ladies' offense continued to struggle with Hiram pitching and failed to bring her home.

The Terriers tacked on another run in the third and two more in both the fifth and sixth. The Ladies were never quite able to string enough offense together to create runs and were shutout again by the Terriers.

Pater pitched game two, throwing six innings while allowing five earned runs. She struck out one and allowed thirteen hits. Aside from Pater's hit, the rest of the Kenyon offense consisted of two walks from Emily Buckwalter and one from Grace Finn

Hiram's game-two starter, Jeskari Rodriguez, threw seven shutout innings. She allowed one hit and three walks while striking out two.

The Ladies will be back in action on Tuesday when they take on the Allegheny College Gators at home. It will be another conference doubleheader, with game one starting at 3:30 p.m.
