Lords sweep Yeomen on Senior Day

GAMBIER, Ohio – Playing in its final home games of the season, the Kenyon College baseball team swept Oberlin College by scores of 3-2 and 6-5. The wins move the Lords record to 22-10 overall on the season and 10-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference.

GAME ONE

The Yeomen touched up Kenyon starter Alex Gow in the top of the second inning after a walk and a sacrifice bunt led to an RBI single. Gow settled in after the hit, striking out the next hitter. Through the first three frames for the Lords, Kenyon couldn't produce a run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Luke Meister and Tripper Capps singled with one out to bring up Will Sturgeon. Sturgeon added another single to score Meister from second and tie the game at one. Following Drew Robinson's sacrifice bunt, Alexander Hoskins reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, bringing in Capps on the play.

Kenyon added its third run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gow singled and moved to second on a balk. Andrew Rabinowitz pushed Gow over to third on his single before Capps dropped in a double near the right-field line.

In the top of the eighth, a Kenyon error kept the Yeomen alive with runners on the corners. Max Anastasio, attempting to steal second, looked as if he was caught stealing, but the ball deflected off of Nate Rosen's glove, allowing the runner on third to score.

In the final chance for Oberlin, Gow retired the first two hitters on a ground out and a strikeout. The Yeomen forced a walk from Gow, but the senior induced another ground out to end the game and secure the complete game.

GAME TWO

In the second, Capps led off the inning with a double to the gap, advancing to third on a Will Sturgeon groundout. Robinson appeared to have driven in Capps from third with a shallow hit into left, but Capps, waiting to see if the ball was caught, was thrown out at the plate trying to score. Hoskins picked up the RBI, bringing in Robinson from second and giving the Lords a 1-0 lead.

Kenyon built onto its lead an inning later as Rosen came around to score after a leadoff walk. Oberlin scratched across a run in the top of the fourth when a sacrifice bunt led to a sacrifice fly. Hoskins restored the two-run lead with a sacrifice fly of his own in the home half of the inning.

In the top of the fifth, a pair of singles and a walk led to a single to center field, tying the game at three. Oberlin took the lead in the following inning on a single with the infield drawn in and a safety squeeze.

Trailing by two, Sturgeon and Robinson singled to start the bottom of the sixth inning. Hoskins drove a ball into the left-center gap, tying the game and bringing in his fourth RBI. A couple of batters later, Gow singled to center to give Kenyon the lead.

Noah Rosenberg held the Yeomen quiet over the next two innings as Oberlin came to bat in the top of the ninth. Rosenberg struck out the leadoff batter, but a single chased him from the game. Entering for the save, Joel Biery received some help from Rabinowitz as he threw out the tying run trying to steal second. Biery struck out the final batter of the game to seal the sweep for the Lords.

Kenyon hits the road for an important series at Allegheny College on Wednesday. First pitch is set for noon in Meadville, Pa.
