Lords defeat Bishops for historic win

DELAWARE, Ohio – In a game to see who would take the No. 2 seed in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team defeated the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops. With their victory over the Bishops, the Lords moved their record 13-3 overall and 8-1 in the NCAC. The win ties the program's record for victories in a season and is the first over Ohio Wesleyan since 2012.

Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan battled through three quarters of play with neither team holding a definitive edge. With the Lords up by two going into the final quarter, the Bishops brought the game within one as Ohio Wesleyan netted a goal with 11:27 remaining in the game. With 8:46 left in the game, the Bishops tied the score up at 10. As the clock approached five minutes Cameron Longway scored the go-ahead goal off a pass from Mike Matteo, giving Kenyon an 11-10 lead. Ohio Wesleyan gained a final chance to tie the game and send it to overtime, but Mayo Amorello registered his 11th save as time expired.

To open the game, the Bishops scored the game's first goal just 58 seconds in. Kenyon came back to tie the score up on Jack Giuffre's first goal of the day. Declan Curry followed with a goal of his own, giving the Lords their first lead. Ohio Wesleyan knotted the score with 11 minutes to go in the first, bringing the score to 2-2. Following a string of turnovers, Matt Pollack placed Kenyon ahead with 6:41 to go in the first. Again, the Bishops tied the game on a man-up opportunity. Pollack scored his second goal of the quarter to give his team the lead. 

In the second quarter, Curry extended the Lords' lead to 5-3 with 11:29  before halftime. Ohio Wesleyan answered with two quick goals, tying the game at five. Giuffre gave Kenyon the lead back with four minutes to go. At halftime, the Lords held on for a 6-5 lead. 

The Bishops tied and took the lead in a span of a minute, taking their first lead since the opening goal. Kenyon leveled the score shortly after on Pollack's third goal of the game.  Rollins Heath stepped up to give Kenyon the lead at 8-7 off on Longway's pass. Ohio Wesleyan tied the game up with 6:47 remaining in the third, but goals from Joe Bolea and Joe Boesel gave the Lords a two-goal advantage going into the final period.

Kenyon wraps up the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament, the highest placement its' received, and hosts Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for the first round of the NCAC Tournament.
