Ladies use bats to sweep Yeowomen

GAMBIER, Oh. – The Kenyon College Ladies used timely hitting in both games of their doubleheader with Oberlin College to walk away with a pair of wins against the Yeowomen. The Ladies improved their record to 18-8 overall and 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Oberlin fell to 6-14-1 overall, 0-4 NCAC.

GAME ONE

After a scoreless first inning, the Ladies started the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Nicole Bishay singled to right and advanced on Clare McMahon's walk. With runners on, Paige Milhon laced a single into center field to score Bishay from second. Following the RBI single, Maddie Friday reached first on a hit by pitch to load the bases for Grace Finn. The Yeowomen forced in a run by hitting Finn, giving the Ladies a 2-0 lead. Sara Campagna registered her first of three RBIs in the game with a single to right field. Following an Emily Buckwalter sacrifice fly, Bella Albrecht reached on a dropped fly ball by the Oberlin right fielder, scoring Finn. On the same play, Campagna came all the way around to score on an error by the third baseman. After batting around in the inning, the Ladies held a 6-0 lead.

Oberlin scored two in the following inning on a two-out RBI single, cutting the Kenyon lead down to four. In the top of the fourth, Oberlin brought the game within two on a fielder's choice and an RBI groundout.

The Ladies answered right back with two of their own on Bishay's single and Finn's sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the sixth, Campagna ripped a single that landed on the left-field line to score McMahon and Friday and end the game by run rule, 12-4.

GAME TWO

Determined to force a doubleheader split, the Yeowomen jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings.

In the third inning, Campagna led things off with a double to deep right-center before scoring on Buckwalter's single. Albrecht tapped a ball to first but the throw was offline trying to force Buckwalter out at second, leading to a Natalya Delsante walk. Bishay, starting as the pitcher for both games, lifted a sacrifice fly and brought the Ladies within one. With one out and the bases loaded, Milhon scored Albrecht on a groundout to tie the game at three. Pinch-hitting for Friday, Olivia Hurley roped a single into left field, giving Kenyon their first lead of the ballgame. Campagna added another run on a single to give the Ladies a 6-3 lead. Of the six runs that crossed the plate, only two were earned for the Yeowomen staff.

With darkness starting to creep in, the Ladies left little doubt in the bottom of the fourth. Kenyon tacked on three more runs on three hits to give them a 9-3 advantage.

Oberlin, determined to force a stoppage rather than the end of the game, scored two runs on their three hits in the top of the fifth. Facing a 9-5 deficit, the final Yeowomen hitter struck out and the game was ruled a full contest.

The Ladies look to carry their momentum into a pair of non-conference matchups with Marietta College on Sunday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
