Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Shenandoah spoils Kenyon’s home opener

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Saturday afternoon, the Kenyon College field hockey team played its first home game of the 2022 season. The occasion, however, didn't go the way the Owls expected as they ran into an offensively proficient Shenandoah University team that rolled to a 7-0 win.

The visiting Hornets, who've recorded 21 goals in three games, improved to a perfect 3-0, while the Owls slipped to 1-2 with the loss.

Kenyon held off the Hornets for the first 13 minutes of play, but when Kelsey Jones scored with 64 seconds left in the first quarter, the flood gates began to open. Before the half, Shenandoah scored three more times on goals from Mairead Mckibbin, Cassidy Morrison and Lauren Tyre.

Kenyon struggled to counter and faced a 4-0 halftime deficit after being outshot 14-2 in the first 30 minutes of play.

Tyre scored again in the third quarter and Mckibbin scored again in the fourth. With 1:28 left in the game, Kate Robinson finalized the scoring for the Hornets. While those two each racked up a pair of goals, Morrison had a goal and an assist and Farren Winter tallied a trio of assists.

The Owls made a push in the fourth quarter, as they fired off four shots and earned three penalty corners. They, however, could not get a ball past Shenandoah goalkeeper Taylor Swann, who made a pair of saves in the shutout victory.

Kenyon keepers, Payton Doan and Megan Lydon, split time once again. Doan yielded four goals and made two saves, while Lydon allowed three goals and made five saves.

The Owls don't have time to dwell on the loss. They return to The Field at Benson Bowl tomorrow to take on Allegheny College at noon.
