GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Owls bounced back in their second home contest in two days, erasing the memory of a loss in their home opener one day prior with a 2-0 win against Allegheny College (4-1) on The Field at Benson Bowl.
Kenyon took control early, putting two goals on the board in the first period. The Owls converted on the game's first shot as Ella Haskins put the ball past the keeper after an assist from Kiersten Hoffmann.
Allegheny's first shots came in the ninth minute as the Gators took a pair of shots in an eight-second period, but Kenyon's Payton Doan saved one attempt while the other shot sailed wide.
The Owls returned the favor in the 11th minute with three shots in quick succession. Hoffmann was responsible for the second of the two attempts, with Haskins getting blocked on the first attempt before Hoffmann notched Kenyon's second goal of the game after an assist from Karina Bharatiya.
Kenyon controlled the momentum in the second quarter despite the score remaining 2-0, finishing the frame with six shots and five penalty corners while holding Allegheny without an attempt at either.
The Gators were aggressive in the third quarter with a 7-4 shot advantage and a 3-1 edge on corners, but Owls' goalkeeper Megan Lydon notched three saves to keep the visitors off the board.
Kenyon faced similar pressure in the fourth quarter as Allegheny out-shot the Owls 7-2 and held an identical margin in corner kicks, but the home team held firm to preserve its lead. The Gators took three shots and two corners over a 1:05 stretch starting at the 56:35 mark, but Lydon and the Kenyon defense maintained the shutout to secure a 2-0 win.
Hoffmann led Kenyon offensively, notching a goal and an assist on two shots on goal and three total shots. Haskins also had two shots on goal and three shots while adding the other Owls' goal. Bella Kern tied Allegheny's Emily Robles with a game-high five shots and put a game-high four shots on target. Doan and Lydon split time in goal for the Owls, with Doan securing one save on two shots faced in the first half, and Lydon finishing with seven saves on 14 shots faced in the second half.
Up next, Kenyon (2-2) heads to Springfield, Ohio for a non-conference clash with Wittenberg University (1-2) at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17.
