Owls top Olivet, deliver first win for Olson

OLIVET, Mich. -- Playing in the NCAC-MIAA Crossover on Saturday at Olivet College, the Kenyon College volleyball team notched its first win of the season. Down a set to the host Comets, the Owls whipped up three straight to rally for a 21-25, 25-20, 25-13, 25-23 win.

Before that match was played, the Owls nearly had another win. In the first match of the day, Kenyon opened with a 2-1 lead over Alma College, but the Scots rallied and claimed a 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 15-12 victory.

The split gave Kenyon a 1-5 record and a first win for new head coach Emma Olson.

After dropping the first set to Olivet, Kenyon rebounded quickly, taking leads of 10-5 and 15-9 in the second set. Olivet stormed back using a 6-0 run to pull within 18-17, but Kenyon got kills from Lindsey Abramson and Paige Milhon to extend its lead before Eras Yager put the set away with one more kill.

In the third set, the Owls rolled. They dailed up 15 kills with just one error in 30 attempts. Their .467 hitting percentage included an 11-2 run that sealed the set's outcome. During the run, Macy Reimbold had four kills, while Yager had two and Abramson had one. Joy Carstanjen capped off the set with an ace for the Owls.

The Comets did not fold and, in fact, held the lead for most of the fourth set. Trailing 15-13, Kenyon got back on track with another run. This time, the Owls had the Comets to thank, as the home team reeled off four attack errors and paved the way for Kenyon to move in front, 18-15.

Down the stretch, the teams went back-and-forth. Kenyon moved ahead 24-23 on a kill from Milhon and then finished things off by capitalizing on another Olivet error.

Throughout the four sets, Reimbold had a match-high 17 kills. Milhon had 13 kills and Abramson had 10. Jac Cousineau rang up 39 assists and first-year libero Elizabeth Sonza amassed 20 digs.

As a team, the Owls posted a season-best .234 hitting percentage in the win.

Against Alma, Kenyon threw down 55 kills, had 26 errors and a .157 hitting percentage. The Owls had 14 kills in each of the two sets they won. Alma's numbers were very similar. The Scots recorded 56 kills, 28 errors and a .146 hitting percentage.

Individually, Kenyon was again paced by Reimbold, who had 15 kills and 20 digs. First-year Kathryn McCaffrey also contributed 15 kills, while Abramson scored 13. Cousineau and Maya Sapsford dished out 25 and 20 assists, respectively, while Sonza was credited with another 21 digs.

With the teams splitting the first two sets, the deciding fifth set was needed. In that set, Alma moved ahead early with leads of 6-3 and 9-4. Kills by Milhon and Reimbold, paired with a couple Alma errors, pulled Kenyon within two at 11-9.

Two more Alma attack errors, followed by a kill from McCaffrey, gave Kenyon a 12-11 advantage. From there, however, the Owls stalled. Two Kenyon errors and two Alma kills from Madison Bott put the match away.
