Game Recap: Field Hockey |

With little offense, Owls outlast Tigers

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Saturday at Wittenberg University, the Kenyon College field hockey team managed just three shots against the host Tigers. One of those shots, however, found the back of the Wittenberg cage and held up as the game-winner in the Owls' 1-0 non-conference victory at Edwards-Maurer Field.

Kenyon, now 3-2, recorded two shots in the first quarter of play. Both those shots came from Kiersten Hoffmann and both were saved by Wittenberg goalkeeper Caitlin Archdeacon.

The Owls' third, and final, shot of the game occurred in the third quarter, at the 41:37 mark of the game. Following a penalty corner, Bella Kern used an assist from Lydia Turk to beat Archdeacon and the Tigers defense, giving Kenyon all the offense it needed. The goal was Kern's second of the season and the 20th of her Kenyon career.

At the other end of the field, Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan put in some work to record her first complete shutout of the season and the 14th of her career. To do so, Doan had to make 10 saves against the Tigers. That total was two more saves than she made in her previous four games combined.

Wittenberg, which fell to 2-3 with the loss, ended up outshooting Kenyon, 13-3. The Tigers also built up a 9-4 advantage in penalty corners.

Next up for the Owls is a Tuesday home game against rival Denison. That contest is slated for a 5 p.m. start on The Field at Benson Bowl.
