Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late surge boosts Kenyon to 1-0 win over Denison

GAMBIER, Ohio – In a game with very little offensive highlights, the Kenyon College field hockey team recorded a fourth-quarter goal to edge rival Denison University, 1-0, Tuesday evening on The Field at Benson Bowl.

The teams combined for a total of just 13 shots, seven for Kenyon and six for Denison. The visiting Big Red posted a more sizable 8-3 advantage in penalty concerns, but were unable to capitalize on any of them.

After a lot of back-and-forth on the field, Kenyon head coach Morgan Brozena ended up making a game-changing decision from the sideline. With 6:53 left in the game, she subbed in first-year Lana Stone. A little more than two minutes later, Stone collected a pass just before midfield and used her fresh legs to run it all the way down to the Denison goal.

Once Stone got on the doorstep, she back-handed a pass to center. That's where a charging Bella Kern got her stick on it and deflected it into the Big Red cage. It was Stone's first assist of the season and Kern's team-leading third goal of the season.

Prior to the goal, the best chance either team had of scoring came off a Kenyon first-quarter penalty corner. After the ball was inserted, Carolyn Herbosa fired a shot from the top of the circle. It traveled toward the right side of the goal, but Denison's Madeleine Hunt was there to make a defensive save.

Kenyon held a 2-1 advantage in shots during the first quarter of play. Denison posted a 2-0 advantage in the second and Kenyon went 2-0 in the third. Both teams managed three shots in the fourth quarter.

Five of Kenyon's shots were on target, resulting in four saves for Denison goalkeeper Athena Joannou. Three of Denison's shots were on goal, resulting in three saves for Kenyon goalkeeper Payton Doan.

In her last three games, Doan has played 150 minutes without allowing a goal. Kenyon, as a team, now owns a 4-2 record and has shut out its last three opponents.

With the loss, Denison evened its record at 3-3.
