Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Owls score first, but fall in overtime

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- In their season-opener and playing for the first time as the Owls, the Kenyon College field hockey team registered a third quarter goal Friday to take a 1-0 lead in a neutral-site game against Rhodes College. The Lynx, however, answered with a fourth-quarter tally and then tacked on another goal in overtime to claim a 2-1 victory.

After a scoreless first half in which the Owls were outshot 11-4, the Kenyon team capitalized off a penalty corner in the eighth minute of the third quarter. Bella Kern inserted the ball to the top of the circle, where it was mishandled, but eventually trickled to sophomore Ella Haskins. She then fired the ball toward the cage, but it was deflected and rolled out to Kiersten Hoffmann, another sophomore, who camped out on the right post. Hoffmann battled and pushed the ball down to the goal line. As she did so, Kern came charging in from the left and finished off the play with her first goal of the season and the 17th of her career. The assist for Hoffmann was the first of her collegiate career.

Despite falling behind, Rhodes never let up. Throughout the contest, the Lynx outshot the Owls, 20-6. It wasn't until there was about eight minutes left in the game that Rhodes netted the equalizer. That goal came off a centering pass from the right wing. A Kenyon defender tried to steer the ball in a different direction, but it got past her stick and rolled right to Caroline Briggs, who fired it by Kenyon goalkeeper Megan Lydon.

Lydon came on for starting goalkeeper Payton Doan, who played the entire first half and made four saves. Their counterpart, Riley Marzola, played the entire game for Rhodes and made a pair of saves.

When the game rolled into an extra period, Rhodes ended things pretty quickly. Less than two minutes into overtime, Sophie Croci fed a pass to Grace Utz, who put home the game-winner.

The game marked just the tenth time these two teams faced off. After Friday's result, the Lynx own an all-time series record of 7-3 against Kenyon.

The Owls will now look to turn things around Thursday, when they head to Washington and Jefferson College to take on the Presidents at 7 p.m.
