Owls come up short in two neutral-site matches

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team had the unenviable task of playing Case Western Reserve University and the University of Mount Union in back-to-back matches Saturday at Denison University. With a combined record of  23-6, the teams both handed Kenyon a 3-0 defeat.

In the first match of the day, Case, winners in seven of its last nine, topped Kenyon by set scores of 25-23, 25-14, 25-20. In the second match, Mount Union, winners of nine in a row, logged a 25-12, 25-9, 25-19 win over the Owls.

Against Case, seniors Macy Reimbold and Paige Milhon both had nine kills. Fellow senior Jac Cousineau had 14 assists, while Maya Sapsford, another senior, had 11 assists. In the back row, it was Elizabeth Sonza who racked up a team-high 15 digs, with Reimbold and Abramson adding nine and eight, respectively. Abramson also tallied three blocks against Case.

The Owls came out strong, taking first-set leads of 6-3 and 11-8 over the Spartans. After that, Kenyon maintained the lead, or tied for the lead, up until Case went ahead, 23-22. Kenyon got the next point to tie things up again, but a Case kill and a Kenyon error brought the set to a close.

Case (10-3) controlled the second set, but Kenyon put up another fight in the third, keeping things within three points. With Case leading 17-16, Kenyon started to fade and yielded a Spartans' 6-1 run that paved the way for the win.

Things were not that close against the powerful Mount Union team, which jumped out to a 13-7 lead in set one, a 13-5 lead in set two and a 16-9 lead in set three.

Against the Purple Raiders (13-3), Reimbold and Abramson tied for the team lead in kills again, as both logged seven. Cousineau chalked up 11 more assists and Sapsford recorded seven. Milhon and Kathryn McCaffrey had three blocks apiece, while Sonza racked up another 10 digs.

Up next for the Owls is a Tuesday home match against Capital University.
