Kenyon drops two at River City Classic

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Kenyon College volleyball team chalked up a couple of set wins Saturday, but just couldn't claim a match victory, as it fell by identical 3-1 scores to Washington and Jefferson College and Franciscan University during the final day of the two-day Marietta College River City Classic.

In the Owls' first match, they fell to Washington and Jefferson 25-12, 14-25, 25-18, 25-21. In their second match, they were defeated by Franciscan 25-23, 25-16, 16-25, 25-16.

Against Washington and Jefferson, Kenyon's attack was led by first-year Kathryn McCaffrey, who threw down 10 kills. She also had three blocks and served up a pair of aces. Senior Macy Reimbold added nine kills and 15 digs, while classmate Ellie Luciani added another nine kills to the attack.

Jac Cousineau, the team's setter, had a big day, which started out with 17 assists against Washington and Jefferson. She, too, had a pair of aces. First-year Elizabeth Sonza tacked on a team-high 19 digs in the loss.

Cousineau kept the Kenyon offense on track in the second match, this time dishing up 32 assists, giving her a total of 59 for the weekend. Her work led to a match-high 16 kills from Reimbold and another dozen kills from Lindsey Abramson.

Reimbold also racked up a team-high 19 digs, followed by 13 more from Sonza.

The Owls (0-3) now return home and look forward to their home-opener against Bluffton University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
