Tigers too strong for Owls to overcome

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- The DePauw University women's basketball team dominated the boards Saturday and used a steady stream of free throws to record an 82-54 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over the visiting Kenyon College Owls.

DePauw first-year Riley Mont grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and helped the host Tigers post a 42-22 advantage in team rebounds. Thirteen different DePauw players logged at least one rebound during the game. On the other side of the court, Kenyon first-year Anissa Hardy snared a team-high eight rebounds. Six Kenyon players accounted for the team's other 14 rebounds.

Early in the game, Kenyon maintained the lead due in part to three-point conversions from Bela Krslovic and Alyssa Gest. Krslovic's three gave Kenyon a 12-9 edge with 4:21 left in the first quarter and then Gest's three gave the Owls a 15-13 advantage with 2:48 left.

Kenyon's lead quickly vanished, however, as DePauw whipped up nine straight points to close out the quarter and upheld the lead for good.

The DePauw defense held Kenyon to six second-quarter points, while the Tiger offense blew the game open, taking a 45-21 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, the Tigers went to the free throw line 13 times, made nine of those attempts and pushed their lead to as many as 33 points. Throughout the game, DePauw was 17-of-25 at the free throw line, while Kenyon was 7-of-10.

Kenyon outscored DePauw 21-16 in the fourth quarter, but the Owls never got closer than the final margin of 28.

Senior Katie Orefice led all Kenyon scorers with 13 points. Gest ended up 3-of-7 from long range and finished the game with 12 points. Claudia Cooke had eight and both Krslovic and Mikayla Rudolph scored seven. Hardy had four points to go along with her eight rebounds.

For DePauw, Mont completed a double-double with 10 points to complement her 11 boards. Moira McGinley led all scorers with 20. Maya Shannon scored 14 and C.C. Condra finished with 13.

The loss dropped Kenyon to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference, while the win bumped DePauw to 9-7 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
