Bar-Cohen rings up career-high in Kenyon loss

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Kenyon College sophomore Gefen Bar-Cohen poured in a career-high 29 points Saturday afternoon at Ohio Wesleyan University. The host Battling Bishops, however, made 35 trips to the free throw line, where they shot nearly 90 percent and recorded an 87-77 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) men's basketball victory.

Bar-Cohen was 11-of-15 from the field, he sank 1-of-2 three-point attempts and went 6-of-9 at the free throw. His 29-point output topped his previous collegiate-best of 28, which he recorded earlier this season in a victory at Grinnell College. In addition to his points, 20 of which were scored in the second half, Bar-Cohen also contributed five rebounds and one blocked shot against Ohio Wesleyan.

Kenyon's other double-digit scorers were David Mazon III and Miles Versa. Mazon III went 6-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 at the line for 14 points. He also led the Owls with six rebounds. Versa didn't shoot as well as his teammates, but did manage 11 points.

Overall, Kenyon recovered from a poor shooting performance in its last game to post Saturday shooting percentages of 47.5 percent overall (28-of-59) and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the free throw line, which turned out to be a popular place.

In addition to Kenyon's 21 trips to the line, Ohio Wesleyan wound up going 31-of-35 (88.6 percent) on charity tosses. The Owls were whistled for 26 personal fouls with two starters fouling out. The Battling Bishops were slapped with 16 personal fouls and had one starter foul out.

Free throws aside, Kenyon just couldn't overcome Ohio Wesleyan, which had all five of its starters hit double-digit point totals. Jack Clement led the way with 24. Henry Hinkle had 14, Tony Carter scored 13 and both David Rice and Grant Spicer scored 10.

Bar-Cohen sank the first bucket of the game, but that proved to be Kenyon's only lead. Thirty-nine seconds after Bar-Cohen's field goal, Clement hit a three-ball for the Battling Bishops, who led the rest of the way.

Kenyon twice got within one point in the first half, but Ohio Wesleyan closed out the stanza on a 9-2 run to take a 43-31 lead at the half.

In the second half, Kenyon cut its deficit down to eight and then down to seven on a Bar-Cohen free throw with 2:38 left. Carter responded with a three-pointer, though, and the Owls failed to threaten down the stretch.

The win completed the season sweep of Kenyon for Ohio Wesleyan, which moved its records to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the NCAC. The loss dropped Kenyon to 7-11 overall and 0-9 in NCAC play.
