Turnovers plague Kenyon in first game of 2023

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Ohio Wesleyan University's Kasey Schipfer and Lauren Denison combined for 41 points Wednesday night while guiding the visiting Battling Bishops to a 76-44 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Kenyon College women's basketball team.

The loss dropped the host Owls to 3-8 overall and 0-2 in NCAC play, while Ohio Wesleyan used the win to improve its marks to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC.

Schipfer led all scorers with 21 points. She also tied teammate Alyssa Griner for a game-high nine rebounds. Denison went 5-for-8 from long range and tallied 20 points. Griner added a dozen points and Graci Semtimphelter scored 10 to round out the Ohio Wesleyan double-digit scorers.

Kenyon struggled both offensively and in transition against a pesky Battling Bishops defense. No Kenyon player reached a double-digit scoring output. First-year Alexis Newman canned a pair of three-pointers and led the Owls with nine points. Katie Orefice scored eight and Anissa Hardy contributed seven.

Claudia Cooke, who averaged more than 15 points and 14 rebounds over the Owls' previous three games, got in early foul trouble Wednesday and never could quite find a rhythm the rest of the way.

Kenyon's main concern was turnovers. The Owls got off to a good start, taking early leads of 4-0 and 8-2, but when Ohio Wesleyan switched to a full-court press, things began to unravel for Kenyon. The Owls had five turnovers in the final five minutes of the first quarter, making way for the Battling Bishops to end the frame with an 18-11 advantage.

The Battling Bishops didn't let up in the second quarter. They forced seven more turnovers and moved ahead by 12, taking a 38-26 lead at the half.

Throughout the game, Kenyon wound up with 22 turnovers that Ohio Wesleyan converted into 17 points.

The Battling Bishops sealed the outcome in the third quarter by out-scoring Kenyon 17-4. The Owls, who shot 34.8 percent for the game, managed just one field goal in 10 tries during the third quarter.

Kenyon will regroup and move on to play Hiram College next. That conference contest will be at Hiram with a 2 p.m. tipoff Saturday.
