Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Wooster’s late run halts Kenyon’s upset bid

WOOSTER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's basketball team shot nearly 40 percent on three-point attempts and sank a season-best 94.7 percent of its free throws, but just couldn't overcome The College of Wooster Fighting Scots, who went on a late run to secure an 81-67 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) win on Monday night.

Kenyon canned 11 three-pointers (11-of-28), one short of its season high, and went 18-for-19 at the stripe. Gefen Bar-Cohen was a perfect 6-for-6 on charity tosses, while Miles Versa went 4-for-4.

Versa ended up leading the Owls with 13 points and seven rebounds. Anthony Testa went 3-for-5 from long range and matched Versa's total of 13. Bar-Cohen wound up with a dozen points and David Mazon III chipped in with 11.

The Owls (7-8, 0-6 NCAC) whipped up the first five points of the game and played right with Wooster (11-3, 5-1 NCAC) for a majority of the contest. In fact, neither team led by more than five points in the first half, at least not until Jamir Billings hit a three-pointer with 18 seconds left to give Wooster a six-point edge.

Mazon III answered with a buzzer-beating layup to end the first half with Wooster maintaining a slim 39-35 lead. Through those first 20 minutes of play, there were seven lead changes and four tied scores.

The second half opened in similar fashion, as Kenyon chipped away at the Wooster lead. Two free throws from Bar-Cohen brought things within two points. Then, after a three-minute lull, Wooster hit a free throw, but Juan Sergio Matabuena buried a three for Kenyon, tying the game at 43-43 with 15:19 left.

Kenyon regained the lead a minute later, following another Mazon III layup. The teams continued to go back-and-forth with three more lead changes and three more tied scores.

The game's turning point occurred with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. After Nick Lewis snapped a three-pointer for the Owls, a media timeout was taken with Wooster ahead, 56-55. When the teams returned to the floor, the Fighting Scots went on a 16-0 run to build a 72-55 lead with 4:25 remaining.

Stuck in a scoreless drought for nearly six minutes, the Owls finally snapped out of it with two more free throws from Bar-Cohen at the 3:41 mark, but Kenyon was never able to get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

While most statistical categories played out evenly, the Fighting Scots posted big advantages in rebounding (45-29) and points in the paint (30-16).

The Owls will now turn their focus on their next opponent, the Wittenberg University Tigers. That game, also a conference contest, will tip at 7:30 p.m. at Wittenberg on Wednesday.
