GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College field hockey team continued its strong stretch of play, picking up its fourth straight win by defending The Field at Benson Bowl from the visiting Earlham College Quakers. The Owls had their second-highest scoring output this season, winning 5-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest.
The victory extends Kenyon's winning ways as the Owls have an overall record of 8-6 while going 4-2 in the NCAC. The loss dropped the Quakers to a 2-11 overall record, and Ealham is 1-7 in conference play.
Kenyon's five goals are its second-most this season, trailing only the nine they scored on September 10 against Ferrum College. The Owls have outscored each of their opponents by multiple goals over the four-game winning streak, and their overall scoring margin has swelled to 15-4 over the quartet of games.
The Owls controlled this outing against the Quakers, posting a 34-1 edge in shots that included a 22-1 margin in shots on goal. Additionally, Kenyon's offense earned 10 penalty corners, while the defense did not concede any.
All of Kenyon's scoring came from the season's top two scorers: Grace Lane and Maren Lawrence. Lane came into the game with a team-leading eight goals, and the junior posted her second hat trick of the season to cross into double-digits. Lawrence put in two goals to run her season total to eight. It was the first-year's second multi-goal game and her third consecutive contest with a goal.
Lane landed the opening goal late in the first quarter after corralling a rebound, dancing through the defense, and faking out the Earlham goalie to find an opening at the front of the net in the 13th minute.Â
Lawrence found the mark from nearly the same spot, flicking a ball high up and over the keeper in the 28th minute to send the Owls into halftime up 2-0.Â
The Quakers made things interesting with a goal in the 34th minute, but the score and the shot marked Earlham's lone offensive outputs.
Ella Haskins's first assist of the season reinstituted Kenyon's two-goal lead on a Lane score in the 40th minute. Lane struck again 23 seconds into the final frame, smacking in a long shot after taking a pass from Raigan Hutter off a corner. Lawrence put the cherry on top of the 5-1 win after an assist from Hannah Paprotna, giving Hutter and Paprotna three assists apiece this year.
Kenyon has a quick turnaround as they host Concordia University (Wis.) (2-9) in less than 24 hours on Sunday, October 15. The non-conference clash starts at 11 a.m., and the Owls will celebrate their Senior Day as they conclude a three-game homestand.
