Owls fall to Heidelberg and Otterbein in doubleheader

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In a Saturday mid-day doubleheader hosted by Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, the Kenyon College volleyball team (3-16) lost both matches 3-0, falling to the Heidelberg University Student Princes 25-17, 25-14, 25-18 and the Otterbein College Cardinals 25-14, 25-20, and 25-16.

The Owls started off the day against Heidelberg (13-11), and were scoring points early, going up 8-4 to start the day. They did so after trailing 4-1, but battled back off of 2 impressive kills apiece by Rachel Ferrara and Lindsey Abramson, along with attack errors from the opposing team. However, Heidelberg had other plans, going on two separate 6-0 runs to send Kenyon down early 25-17. 

The second and third set got out of hand for the Owls quickly, failing to hold a lead in either set. In the second, the Owls fell 25-14, and 25-18 in the third while being outhit .298 to -.010 for the match.

In the first matchup, Abramson led the way with five kills, while Becca Gwynne and Sophia Menke had four each. Maggie Wolf dished out 13 assists while Joy Carstanjen had 10 digs.

In the second faceoff against the hosting Otterbein College Cardinals (16-7), the hosts came out firing, opening up an 18-10 lead on the Owls to start the match. Despite losing the first set 25-14, Kenyon would attempt to charge back in the second. 

For the second set, despite the Cardinals jumping out to another early lead, the Owls rallied back off of points from Wolf, Aura Barinas, and Olivia Gumz to tie the score at 17. After this tie, however, Otterbein went on an 8-3 run to close out the set. This momentum seemed to carry over into the final set of the match, which Kenyon lost 25-16.

Against the Cardinals, Barinas and Wolf were tied with a team-high five kills, while Barinas added three aces. Wolf also handed out 18 assists and recorded a team-high eight digs. The Owls were outhit .250 to .099 in the losing effort. 

On the day, Abramson led the Owls with eight kills between the two matches. Gwynne led the defensive efforts for both matchups, recording three blocks. Wolf also added strong performances between the two matches with 31 assists while Lauren Blakemore led the day with 14 digs. 

The losses drop the Owls' season-long record to 3-16, while the team's North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) record remains at 0-3, as both teams represented the the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Owls are back in action on Wednesday, October 18th at 7:00 pm at home to face the Hiram College Terriers.
