Owls celebrate Senior Day with a win

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College volleyball team (4-17) honored the 2024 Senior Class in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at Tomisch Area, besting the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots (7-14) in five sets, taking the match 25-15, 23-25, 28-26, 22-25, and 15-9.

Before the game, the squad's lone senior, Lindsey Abramson was honored by an enthusiastic audience of fans and families. Abramson has had quite an impressive career for the Owls, amassing 63 matches played and leading the team in kills this season with 165. Today, she set career highs in assists (3) and digs (14).

Early in the first set, the teams exchanged points and battled evenly. Then, a 6-1 run fueled by kills from Aura Barinas and assists from Maggie Wolf gave the Owls a 16-8 lead in the middle of the first. The Fighting Scots tried to do just that, but Kenyon went on another 8-3 run capped off by Abramson kills to give the Owls a 1-0 early lead. In the first, Kenyon had ten kills to Wooster's three and outhit the Scots .029 to -.172.

The second and third sets were the most tightly contested in the match, with Wooster taking the second 25-23 and Kenyon winning the third 28-26. In those sets, Barinas built her advantage on her way to a team-high 16 kills and 18 points while hitting at a solid .214. In the two sets, the Owls trailed in kills 21-18, but two clutch kills from Sophia Menke and Rachel Ferrara gave the Owls a 2-1 set advantage after three.

The fourth saw another tightly contested set, as the Owls jumped out to an 8-3 lead after a kill from Barinas and an ace from Joy Carstanjen. Wooster responded with a 5-0 run to even the set, and the two teams battled until Wooster rallied for a 6-4 run to end the set 25-22 coming from behind. In the fourth, the Scots outhit the Owls .207 to .136, which proved to be the difference in the close fourth set.

In the fifth and final set, the Owls got a lead and kept it. Early kills from Barinas and Bryn Carrigan saw the Owls up 5-1 in the tie-breaking set. Carrigan and Ambramson added with more kills in the middle of the set and ball-handling errors from the Scots placed the Owls in control 11-9 after some rebellion from Wooster. The Owls ended the game on a 4-0 run to win the match in five in a set in which Kenyon outhit Wooster .192 to .091, despite having three fewer kills.

For the match, Barinas led the team in kills (16) and points (18), while Wolf had an exceptional day on both the offensive and defensive side, leading the team in aces (5), assists (30), and digs (15) while setting a career-high in points (10). Menke and Ferarra also chipped in defensively with five and four blocks respectively.

The win moves the Owls season record to 4-17 and 1-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. With only three matches remaining in the regular season and two of those being conference matchups, Kenyon looks to snag back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The Owls will travel to Granville, Ohio to face the Denison University Big Red in its next matchup at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24.
