DePauw deals Kenyon a conference loss

GREENCASTLE, Ind. -- A 24-point second quarter from the DePauw University Tigers set the tone Saturday, as the Kenyon College football team struggled to keep pace with the home team and dropped a 58-7 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) contest at Blackstock Stadium.

The Owls, who fell to 1-7 overall and 1-5 in NCAC play, got 80 receiving yards from junior David Livingston and 57 rushing yards from Jordon Benjamin. It was Benjamin's three-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that prevented the DePauw defense from chalking up a shutout.

The Tigers, who are the two-time defending conference champs, improved to 9-0 overall and 7-0 in the NCAC. They tallied field goals on two of their first three possessions to take an early 6-0 lead. Before the close of the first quarter, running back Gus Baumgartner broke off a 15-yard touchdown run to push the score to 13-0 in favor of DePauw.

In the second quarter, the Tigers blew the game open by scoring three touchdowns in an eight-minute span. The first of the three was a four-yard pass from Nathan McCahill to Daniel Roach. The second was a 77-yard fumble recovery from Brevon Gude and the third was a four-yard run from Gabe Quigley.

That flurry, and an additional field goal from Joseph Sullivan, got the Tigers to halftime with a 37-0 lead.

McCahill threw a couple more touchdown passes in the third quarter to extend the lead to 58-0. He connected with Jaylon Smith on a 19-yard strike and then with Robby Ballentine on a 12-yard pass and catch. In between those two tallies, Ryland Irvin picked off a Kenyon pass and returned 75 yards for another DePauw touchdown.

McCahill finished the game 22-of-29 for 279 yards and three touchdowns. Ballentine was his top target, hauling in seven passes for 142 yards. On the ground, the Tigers were led by Baumgartner, who amassed 88 yards.

Overall, DePauw had 421 yards of total offense, while Kenyon had 218. The Tigers put up 301 yards in the air and 120 on the ground. Kenyon had 158 passing yards and 60 rushing yards. Henry Wendorf accounted for most of the Owls' air game, as he went 10-of-23 for 97 yards.

Kenyon's lone scoring drive covered nine plays and 55 yards. It ended with Benjamin crossing the goal line with 6:46 left in the game.

Defensively, Kenyon got nine tackles and a forced fumble from Dominic Simpson. Both Jaylen Cardoso and Jared Hancock added seven tackles apiece.

The Owls return home next Saturday to take on Denison University (5-3, 4-2 NCAC) at 1 p.m.
