Kenyon’s season comes to a close at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops, a field hockey team that thoroughly dominated the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) during the regular season, continued to do so Wednesday, opening postseason play with a 6-0 win over Kenyon College in the NCAC Tournament semifinal contest.

Ohio Wesleyan improved to 17-0 with the victory while notching its 14th consecutive shutout. The Battling Bishops, the top-seed in the four-team NCAC Tournament, now advance to host Denison University in Saturday's NCAC Tournament final. Denison earned its spot by topping DePauw University, 2-0, in the other tournament semifinal.

Kenyon, the tournament's No. 4 seed, ended its 2023 campaign with an overall record of 10-8. The Owls, like every other team this season, just couldn't crack the Battling Bishops defense, which allowed Kenyon just one penalty corner and two shots throughout the contest.

On the other end of the field, goalkeeper Megan Lydon and the rest of the Kenyon defense did a good job of slowing down the Ohio Wesleyan offense in the first half. Despite yielding 15 shots and five corners, the Owls gave up just one goal in each of the first two quarters. Megan Knee scored the first Battling Bishops goal and Emma Wright knocked home the second.

A three-goal third quarter from Ohio Wesleyan broke the game wide open. The Battling Bishops whipped up 11 shots in the frame and got scores from Avery Slucher, Olivia Danley and Colleen McMenamin to move ahead 5-0.

Lauren Kunzler's goal in the fourth quarter gave Ohio Wesleyan six and put a cap on all scoring.

The Battling Bishops ended up with a total of 33 shots, including 22 on goal. Lydon, who made a season-high 17 saves in the Owls last game, made 14 saves against Ohio Wesleyan. Defenders Lucy Scott and Liz Cramer each recorded one defensive save for the Owls.
