Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls own glass game, but fall to Presidents

MARIETTA, Ohio -- The Kenyon College men's basketball team (0-3) fell to Washington & Jefferson College (1-2) by a score of 75-61 at Marietta College in an early season tournament. The Owls kept it close throughout the first half, though they ultimately fell to the Presidents, a team that finished with an impressive 20-7 record last season.

The Owls took an early lead when Nick Nelson poked the ball away for a steal and dished it off to Gefen Bar-Cohen, who slammed the ball home on a fastbreak.

Kenyon maintained a lead for a few minutes and remained competitive courtesy of its presence on the offensive glass. The Owls had nine offensive rebounds and 16 second-chance points in the half, with most of it coming from senior forward Drew Valentino. He had six offensive rebounds in the half, a few of which he scored on putbacks and others that led to baskets for his teammates.

The teams went through a few lead changes and three tied scores, but an 8-2 run from the Presidents put Kenyon in a 36-26 hole with three minutes remaining in the half. Washington and Jefferson went 5-of-11 on three-point attempts and shot 48.6 percent overall to get to halftime with a 41-30 advantage.

Bar-Cohen scored the first six points of the second half for the Owls and a three-pointer by Connor Moss brought the Owls within four points with 15 minutes remaining. However, President guard Matt Seidl netted a quick three to take back control and the Owls were not able to come within striking distance for the rest of the contest.

Bar-Cohen pumped in a team-high 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. He was outdone, however, by Seidl, who finished with 36 points, a total that included a 6-of-10 showing from behind the arc.

Bar-Cohen also made a significant contribution to the rebounding game, as he pulled down nine boards. That number, combined with a game-high 14 rebounds for Valentino, gave the Owls a final 40-34 advantage over the Presidents.

Additional scoring for Kenyon came from Valentino, Moss and Sam Lieberman who all scored eight. As a team, Kenyon shot 36.2 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from long range, though the Owls did knock in 13-of-16 free throws for 81.3 percent.

The Kenyon men have shown flashes during different moments of their first three games, but have yet to sustain it. They will look to piece it all together in their next matchup, which will be their home opener on Tuesday night against Alma College.
