Duratovic shoots down Stars with pair of goals

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Alem Duratovic scored twice Saturday at Mavec Field and lifted the Kenyon College Owls to a 2-0 victory over the Dominican University Stars in the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament.

The win, Kenyon's tenth consecutive in NCAA first-round games, improved the No. 17-ranked Owls' overall season record to 16-4-0. It also advanced the Owls into the second-round of play, where they will face the No. 18-ranked Washington College Shoremen, 2-1 winners over Otterbein University in Saturday's other first-round game held at Mavec Field.

The second-round game between the host Owls and Shoremen will be held Sunday, also at Mavec Field, beginning at 1 p.m.

Against Dominican, Kenyon showed it was the better team for most of the game. In the first half, the Owls outshot the Stars, 7-1, but didn't have anything to show for it. Only two of those seven shots were on goal and Dominican goalkeeper Oscar Cerritos saved them both to keep the game a scoreless draw through the first half.

About five minutes into the second half of play, things really swung in favor of the home team. As Kenyon junior Eamon Dujakovich was chasing down a ball in Stars' territory, he was fouled just outside of the box. Moments later, Duratovic, also a junior, lined up to take the free kick and laced it into the left side of the net, beating Shane Marinkovich, who replaced Cerritos in net.

About 19 minutes after that goal, Duratovic struck again. Circling around near the right side of the box, Duratovic looked as if he was going to pass back out. Instead, he quickly spun around, got the ball on his left foot and beat Marinkovich inside the right post.

The two goals were Duratovic's team leading 11th and 12th of the season. Not quite done with his third collegiate season, Duratovic now has career numbers that include 37 goals, four assists and 78 points. His goal total ranks eighth best all-time at Kenyon and his point total is the ninth best in program history.

Kenyon wound up outshooting Dominican 17-8 for the game. Of the eight Dominican shots, three were on goal and Kenyon goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi saved them all, recording his ninth shutout of the season.
