Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bar-Cohen scores 20 as Owls fall to Cardinals

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Owls men's basketball team (0-6) hosted the Otterbein University Cardinals (4-1) at Tomsich Area on Sunday afternoon for the team's first game out of the Thanksgiving break.

In a high-scoring, physical game that saw 43 total fouls, the Owls could not keep up with the Cardinals' offense, losing 84-67.

Kenyon junior Gefen Bar-Cohen led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting (58.3 percent) from the field. He hauled in six rebounds and dished out one assist while capitalizing on his trips to the free throw line, shooting 6-of-9 (66.7 percent).

The Owsl were very efficient from the field to start the game, going 3-of-3 as Bar-Cohen, Dylan Fuerst, and Drew Valentino each found the bottom of the net to give the Owls an early 7-2 lead five minutes into the contest.

The scoring remained fairly even in the middle part of the half, but with 11:30 remaining, the Cardinals embarked on their biggest scoring run of the afternoon, hitting on a three-minute 10-0 run while going 2-of-2 from beyond the arc to build a 21-13 lead.

Otterbein maintained its lead for the remainder of the first half, answering every basket and quelling any momentum Kenyon tried to create, closing the half on an 18-13 run. In the latter part of the half, Connor Moss and Anthony Testa entered the stat sheet, netting four and three points respectively, as the Owls trailed 36-26 at the break.

Through the first 20 minutes, Kenyon (39.1 percent) had a stronger shooting percentage than Otterbein (38.7 percent) but lost the rebound battle 20-17 and committed seven turnovers to Otterbein's two, keeping the team ten points behind.

In the second half, the Cardinals offense exploded for a 22-10 run to open play, giving Otterbein its largest lead of the game at 58-36 with 11:31 to play.

After the Cardinals opened up the lead, the Owls did not back down easily as the battle of the birds came down the stretch. Nick Nelson led the charge with seven points as Kenyon outscored Otterbein 31-28 in the final ten minutes. Bar-Cohen chipped in with six in the run, while Fuerst, Testa, Juan Sergio Matabuena, and Peter Haas each found the basket as the Owls shot 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from deep to end the game 84-67.

Kenyon shot 49 percent from the field for the game while hitting 30.8 percent of its threes and 60 percent of shots from the charity stripe. The Owls grabbed 32 rebounds and had 34 points in the paint.

Bar-Cohen's 20 points were the highest of either team, while Nelson added 10, Fuerst finished with nine, and Moss and Testa each had six.

The Owls are back in action on Wednesday night as the team looks to capture its first win on the road against the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies at 8:00 p.m. from New Concord, Ohio in the team's penultimate non-conference game of the season.
