Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kenyon falls in tournament championship

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Getting behind by two goals in the first half of action, the Kenyon College men's soccer team could not recuperate and suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Denison University Big Red in Saturday's championship game of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

The loss stopped Kenyon's win streak at 10 games and dropped the Owls' overall record to 15-4-0. The win for Denison makes the Big Red 12-4-3 overall and gives them the conference's automatic berth into the upcoming NCAA Division III Tournament.
Kenyon will have to wait until Monday to find out if its postseason continues. The NCAA Selection Committee will reveal the national bracket at 2 p.m. EST.

Back at Mavec Field, Denison posted the first goal of the championship game in the 17th minute. Kameron Kist worked through the right side of the Kenyon defense, got to the end line and set in a low crossing pass that was met by Cameron McIntosh. As Kenyon goalkeeper Jack Pedreschi moved to his right, McIntosh fired his shot to Pedreschi's left and inside the right post.

About 20 minutes later, the Big Red doubled their lead. This time it was another ball from the right side sent into the Kenyon box. The ball rattled between two Owl defenders and squirted out to Denison's Jack Rice, who was in the right place at the right time.

Kenyon was down, but not out. The Owls had a response just two minutes after that second Big Red goal. Following a Denison foul on the right side, Max Thesing lined up to take the free kick. His left-footed boot bounced in the middle of the box. That's where Atli Hrafnkelsson, who charged up the middle, met the ball and headed it into the right corner of the Big Red net.

Although Kenyon outshot Denison 9-2 in the first half, the Big Red took a 2-1 lead into the break.

The back-breaker for the Owls occurred five minutes into the second half. A Denison ball sent into the box bounced off a Kenyon defender and to Denison's Corey Brunner. Pedreschi lost his footing on the play and by the time he recovered, Brunner put the ball over the line.

For the game, Denison had just three shots and scored on all three. Kenyon had 15 shots, five of which were on goal. The Owls also posted a lopsided 8-0 advantage in corners, but could not capitalize.

Following the game, the NCAC All-Tournament Team was announced. Making the squad for Kenyon were Eamon Dujakovich, Matt Nguyen and Aidan Burns.
