Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Kenyon drops road matchup to Case Western

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Kenyon College Owls women's basketball team (2-5) traveled to Northeast Ohio on Friday night for a meeting with the Case Western Reserve University Spartans in Cleveland.

Coming off of back-to-back wins, the Spartans' efficient offense and smothering defense were too much for the Owls tonight, as Kenyon fell 72-29.

Claudia Cooke and Alexis Newman matched each other in points for the second straight game to lead Kenyon, in a contest where baskets were hard to come by against an experienced Case Western team, rostering five seniors and two graduate students. Anissa Hardy was the defensive standout for the Owls, registering a season-high three blocks, one steal, and five defensive rebounds.

The Spartans (5-3) came out fast right from the opening tip, going on a 10-2 run in the game's first three minutes while shooting three-of-four (75 percent) from the field and hitting two threes. The post-play of Cooke and Hardy, which proved successful on the team's two-game winning streak, was quickly met with double and triple-teams from the home squad, leading to challenges moving the basketball. Mikayla Rudolph opened the game scoring four of Kenyon's first seven points as she drove to the hoop for two nice layups. As the first ten minutes came to an end, the Spartans led 23-7.

To start the second, Newman, coming off a career-high twelve points in Kenyon's last outing against Earlham, drained a deep three from the top of the arc off of a nice pass from Bela Krslovic. In the second quarter, the Owls worked to slow down offensive possession in an attempt to break any Case Western momentum. However, the lengthy offensive sets yielded little rewards for Kenyon's offense, as the Spartans entered halftime with a 44-12 lead.

Out of halftime, the Owls had two great defensive stands leading to good looks on the other end. A shot clock violation caused by some pesky Owls defense and a Hardy steal led to Cooke sinking a nice double move in the post on the other end. Hardy led the defensive effort for Kenyon in the quarter, recording two blocks and a steal. Cooke led the offensive charge with four points, but the Spartans held the advantage at 59-16.

In the game's final quarter, Kenyon had its highest-scoring ten-minute stretch, as Cooke, Hardy, Krslovic, Newman and Melana Pomerants each made shots and stood tough on the defensive end, holding Case Western to its lowest total of the evening, an impressive run considering the Spartans shot 48.3% from the field for the game. It was simply too much to overcome in the end, falling 72-29 in full-time.

For the game, Kenyon capitalized on its free throw attempts, going four-of-six from the line and brought in 28 rebounds. Defensively, the team had four blocks, three steals, and caused 13 turnovers.

Newman and Cooke led the team offensively with seven points each. Rudolph and Hardy added six points of their own, while Krslovic finished with two points and Pomerants had one with a team-high two steals.

The Owls drop to 2-5 on the season and look to bounce back for the team's first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup of the season, taking on the DePauw University Tigers at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 9th from Tomsich Arena.
