Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls tame Tigers for first win of the season

GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College Owls men's basketball (1-7) team hosted the DePauw University Tigers (3-4) in the squad's first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) matchup of the season from Tomsich Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After a tightly contested game that saw eight led changes, Anthony Testa hit the game-winning corner three with six-tenths of a second remaining to give Kenyon its first win of the season 73-71.

Despite a close first half, the Owls trailed 39-32 entering the game's final 20 minutes. DePauw opened up a 12-point lead early in the half, but Kenyon stuck around and fought every possession.

With less than three minutes to play, the home team found itself down nine points, the second-largest Tigers lead of the afternoon. Connor Moss and Dylan Fuerst each made baskets to cut the deficit to six, and after DePauw answered on the other end, Nick Nelson hit an impressive layup to once again bring the Owls within a half dozen points.

Gefen Bar-Cohen hauled in an offensive rebound after a great defensive stand and earned a trip to the line, making both free throws to set the score at 69-65. He answered that with a tough defensive rebound and made a wing three on the ensuing trip to force a one-possession game at 69-68. After DePauw made both free throws when Kenyon was forced to foul, Nelson stepped up again and sunk a layup to bring the contest to 71-70 with 17 seconds remaining.

The Owls fouled again to stop the clock for a one-and-one opportunity, and grabbed the missed attempt to make a run for one final shot. Fuerst snagged an offensive rebound, tip-toed along the baseline and slung a pass to Testa in the corner, who buried the clutch three for the Kenyon win 73-71.

Kenyon battled back throughout the entire game, despite trailing for 77.2 percent of the contest. The Owls ended on a 15-7 run in the final three minutes while shooting five-of-seven from the field and two-of-three from downtown, part of a 41-point second-half effort.

As a team, the Owls shot 48.2 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from three, but made shots when it mattered most. From the charity stripe, Kenyon had a clear advantage, burying 63.6 percent of its shots compared to DePauw's 50 percent. In the paint, the team hauled in 33 rebounds and won the points-in-the-paint battle 42-34.

Individually, Nelson and Moss led the Owls this afternoon, each turning in 15 points, a career-high for Moss. Fuerst also etched his career high, scoring 14 points while recording two steals and two assists, with the last dish coming on the acrobatic effort to Testa for the win. Bar-Cohen had a 13-point day while grabbing a game-high ten boards, and Juan Sergio Matabuena added seven points.

The win improves the Owls' record to 1-7 (1-0 NCAC) and marks the first win under first-year head coach Steve Phillips. Kenyon is back in action for another NCAC matchup on Wednesday night to face the Wabash College Little Giants at 7:00 pm from Crawfordsville, Indiana.
