Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers’ run cracks open close contest at Tomsich

GAMBIER, Ohio -- After needing overtime to decide their first meeting earlier this year, the Kenyon College and Wittenberg University men's basketball teams played out another close contest Saturday at Tomsich Arena. The visiting Tigers, however, broke loose in the second half and went on to record a 69-52 conference victory.

It was a 12-0 Wittenberg run in the middle of the second half that broke the Owls' back. Kenyon never recovered from that point and fell to 7-16 overall and 0-14 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. On the other bench, the Tigers evened out their records at 11-11 overall and 7-7 within conference competition.

Wittenberg held the lead for nearly 70 percent of the first half, but Kenyon was never out of reach. Both teams used balanced offensive scoring attacks, with eight players scoring for Kenyon and seven scoring for Wittenberg. Throughout those first 20 minutes of play, the lead changed hands six times and there were three tied scores.

After Wittenberg gained the early lead, a hook shot from Dylan Osimethaone of five Kenyon seniors honored before the game, gave Kenyon its first edge at 9-8 with 16:40 on the clock. A few moments later, a three-pointer from Povilas Cereska, followed by a pair of free throws from Gefen Bar-Cohen, pushed the Owls ahead, 14-11.

Wittenberg tied it at 16 and then went ahead by as many as six after a Daniel Asher turnaround jumper found its mark with 6:12 left on the clock. The Tigers never relinquished the lead for the remainder of the half, but a free throw from Kenyon's Nick Nelson tied things up, 29-29, just before the break.

The teams continued to go back-and-forth in the early stages of the second half. Then, with the score knotted at 40-40, Wittenberg began to break away. The Tigers went on a 12-point tear that included four field goals and four free throws. At the other end of the floor, the Owls missed eight consecutive shots and made a couple of turnovers during that same span.

A layup and two more free throws from Bar-Cohen brought the Owls within eight, but the Tigers charged back with a 7-1 run that was capped with a three-pointer from Levi Boettcher. That made the margin 15 with just a little more than six minutes to play.

Down the stretch, Kenyon couldn't whittle the Tigers' lead down to any less than a dozen points.

Bar-Cohen, a sophomore, led Kenyon with 14 points and Alex Boyd, a senior, tossed in 10 points. Nelson, a first-year, added eight and no other Kenyon player scored more than five, as the Owls shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) for the game.

Wittenberg's Trey Killens led all scorers with 18. Boettcher ended up with 17 and Brice Hill added 14 for the Tigers, who shot 51.1 percent (23-of-45).
