Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls’ quick start fizzles against first-place Tigers

GAMBIER, Ohio -- Katie Orefice kick-started the Kenyon College offense Saturday and wound up scoring nearly half the Owls' points, but her efforts alone could not stop the visiting Wittenberg University Tigers from ringing up a 72-50 North Coast Athletic Conference women's basketball win.

Orefice went 7-of-8 at the free throw line, boosting her to a game-high 24 points. She also hauled in 11 rebounds to register her second-straight double-double.

The Owls put their best foot forward to start the game, knocking down the first hoop and maintaining the lead throughout the first 10 minutes of play against the first-place Tigers. Orefice and Mikayla Rudolph combined to score 11 points and snare five rebounds in the first quarter and steered Kenyon to a 15-9 lead. Defensively, the Owls forced four turnovers and held the Tigers to 4-of-14 shooting (28.6 percent).

The tables turned in the second quarter. The Wittenberg defense held Kenyon to a 3-of-14 showing (21.4 percent) and shut down the duo of Orefice and Rudolph, which did not record a point in the quarter. The Tigers also crashed the boards, out-rebounding Kenyon 13-2 over the 10-minute span.

At the half, Wittenberg held a slim 26-23 lead. More than half of the Tigers' points came from Jazmyn Gaines-Burns, who scored 14, including 10 in the second quarter.

As the second half unfolded, it was more Wittenberg, on both sides of the floor. The Tigers generated a 10-0 run to open a 13-point lead. A driving layup from Orefice put Kenyon's first points of the third quarter on the board with 6:28 on the clock. Wittenberg responded and went on to open a 17-point lead before Orefice connected on her only three-point bucket of the game.

Facing a 14-point deficit in the fourth, Kenyon never got closer than a dozen points the rest of the way. Taryn Cash took over offensive duties for Wittenberg and helped extend the lead to 22. She had eight points in the final quarter and finished with 11.

Cash was one of three Wittenberg players to dial up a double-digit scoring totals. Evie Wolshire matched Cash's 11, while Gaines-Burns poured in a team-high 23 points. No Wittenberg player had more than six rebounds, but the Tigers racked up a 39-28 advantage on the glass.

For Kenyon, Orefice's output was backed by nine points from Anissa Hardy and eight from Rudolph. The Owls struggled throughout the game to find their shooting stroke. As a team, they connected at a rate of just 28.8 percent (15-of-52). Wittenberg overcame its slow start to shoot 50.0 percent (28-of-56).

The loss dropped Kenyon to 7-15 overall and 3-8 in the NCAC. The win moved Wittenberg to 18-4 overall and 11-1 in NCAC play.
