Owls coast to victory in 2023 debut

GAMBIER, Ohio -- The Kenyon College women's lacrosse team opened the 2023 season by picking up right where it left off last season. Ella Murphy and Caroline O'Neil both scored three goals Saturday and steered the Owls to a 17-4 home victory over the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University.

Kenyon, coming off a 16-2 season, kicked off the new campaign by out-shooting John Carroll, 34-22, taking an early five-goal lead, and never letting up. The Owls took advantage of two early yellow cards on John Carroll and watched senior Julia Losey pump in the first two tallies of the season.

Murphy, a senior, also scored in the first quarter as did first-years Lily Mason and Spencer Kirsch. That opened a 5-1 cushion for the Owls. Murphy then scored the first two goals of the second quarter with Maddie Garner, Mason and O'Neil also penciling their names into the scorebook. That left Kenyon with a rather comfortable 10-3 advantage at halftime.

One year ago, Murphy was Kenyon's second leading scorer, finishing the season with 40 goals and 43 points. The only person to best that was O'Neil, who had an All-America campaign that included 56 goals and 74 points.

After her second-quarter goal, O'Neil, a senior, tacked on two more in the third to run Kenyon's lead to 13-4. She later added an assist in the fourth quarter and wound up leading the team with a four-point game.

Murphy's three-point game was matched by Losey and Kirsch, who both registered two goals and an assist. Mason had two points on two goals, while Garner and Kate Lengel had two points on a goal and an assist. In all, Kenyon had a dozen players record at least one point against John Carroll.

Garner also added a team-high five draw controls, while Mason contributed four.

Defensively, Kenyon allowed just 10 shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Nola Garand played all 60 minutes, made six saves, caused a turnover, and posted a team-high three ground balls.

The Owls will continue the busy early-portion of their schedule with a Monday home game against Albion College. The rest of the week ahead includes a road game at Capital University on Wednesday and then back home again Saturday for a contest against Washington and Jefferson College.
